Is she having trouble swallowing altogether? If so, go to hospital and see the speech therapist. They can diagnose actual swallowing difficulties, and recommend better ways.

My wife is a Speech Pathologist (45 yrs). They call it Dysphagia. First thing to get done would be a Swallowing Study and they would go from that point. Usually, a Radiologist and a Speech Pathologist do the procedure together
