This quote at the bottom of the page was from last years thread.. we ended up with some money left over and I bought a few sacks of rice to give away, since there was not enough for everyone we used the numbers the kids had as a raffel and gave away smaller bags of rice.. 100 kilos.. so over 200 pounds total

To explain, the first year when Rob was here as Santa... Tata (our announcer) had gone to every home in the Barangay and took notes of everyone's names, so we would have a count of how many kids.. and on Christmas day he called the kids names one at a time and they came up to the stage and chose the toy that they wanted..

This was slow.. real slow.. and poor Rob sat up on stage for about 4 hours or more sweating away in that hot Santa suit.

So last year Tata again went to every house again in our Barangay and took notes of the kids names and assigned them a number that they drew out of a hat.

This way it was luck of the draw also who was called first, in the middle or last.

Obviously by the time the last ones that go through the line the toys have been picked over pretty well, and the best stuff is gone, so to be more fair that's how we did it.

Also we had the kids line up by number, so there were no surprises like the first year and faster.

The first year when Tata called their names, some kids had to come from way over on the other side of the basketball court, and fight their way through the crowd to get to the stage. and every time we tried to clear out a lane, they would end up closing it back again..

I cant remember the total count of kids in our village, but it is over 600.

Then after we were finished last year.. I took a quick break at the house, then loaded up everything that was left over and went to another small village (pics posted from there also in last years thread)

So ended up being about 800 toys we gave away total.

Each year we are learning things to make it faster and better for the next year, and if we have about the same money as last year, I would skip the rice and get more and better toys, as we ran out at our last stop and there were a few kids that did not get anything, I was sad about that and told them I would try to do a better job next year..

Also they got the left overs and most of the cool stuff was gone by the time I got there.

We will just have to wait and see what the total ends up being this year before we can really plan the shopping.

Also since we have extra money.. there is a small area over by the next village over in Sillion where we stayed during the Typhoon last week, I am planning to find out how many kids are living there but I am guessing somewhere around 150 to 200 and going to try to get toys for them all also.

I am going to go start shopping tomorrow or the next day and will get photos from the store.

I've had 53 Christmases on this planet and there are too many kids that never get even ONE so I can certainly dump the change jar and the truck ashtray and try to help the kiddos.

Just one big smile form one of the 600 children holding a Christmas present is all the thanks I think any of us need.

My kids have been blessed as was I growing up. Never wanted for anything.
These kids deserve a little of that at least at Christmas.
