I have a very long-time friend of mine that is just getting into home inspections. I talked to him last night and he wants me to get certified and work with him. It is too long a process to not get another job in the interim, but in a "big picture" way, it could work out to be something pretty good for me...and him too. It seems to pay pretty well. It took him about 8 months to get the license and about $3000.00.

Sorry to hear about the lay off but it already seems that new doors are already opening up.

If you go that route, be sure and get a decent IR camera. You'll also need a good moisture meter and amp probe. This will save you a ton of work as you can glance at a panel for hot neutrals and walls/ceilings for any kind of leak. You'll want to get the latest NEC manual-a Handbook if you can swing it. Handbooks give examples of code and proper wiring/sizing of conductors. They make a quick receptacle module that you can tell if it is wired properly. Fire codes are listed in NFPA 72. If you ever run into a residential elevator, those MUST be inspected by a licensed inspector.
I'm not a home inspector, but I'm pretty adept at building codes. If you have any questions-feel free to ask.

Not talking about interview skills. I'm talking about superseding the whole "send a resume" bullshit that makes you just one grain of sand on a beach. Sometimes an outside view helps you see and language your strengths.

But if you feel like you have it handled, no worries. Just trying to help.

I DEFINITELY, don't have it handled. I have a doctor's appointment and another appointment this afternoon, but I will be back in touch.

The Lord gives me a word for you. Matthew 8:23-27.

In Matthew 8, we read about another trip on the water (vv.23-27). Jesus got into the boat and the disciples followed Him (v.23). Then a terrible storm arose, and Jesus’ disciples feared for their lives. They awakened a sleeping Jesus, who they assumed was unaware of the crisis.

While Jesus was literally in the same boat as His followers, He was unconcerned about the weather. As the all-powerful Creator, He had no fear of a storm. “He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm” (v.26).

But we are not all-powerful, and we are oh-so-prone to fear. So what are we to do when the storms of life rage around us? Whether they quickly blow over or last for a long time, we can be confident in this: We are in the same boat with the One whom even the winds and the sea obey.

Remember, aerovette, no danger can come so near the Christian that God is not nearer.

Heavenly Father, this life is full of uncertainty. But You have promised us Your unfailing presence. May aerovette see You today—especially when he is tempted to panic or to do things in his own strength.

God bless you, brother and stay connected to us on here. Iron sharpens iron!

With your work background you'll be eligible for many and varied job opportunities. Roll with the punches ref the divorce and make sure you have a very good lawyer. Been there done that. He'll/she will take the grief of negotiations away from you and give good advice and options for you. Hope everything goes as good as possible. We'll all be here to assist.

To keep a long story short...

Cliffs: I remember feeling like I was completely at the end of the world, and just decided to drop out of the rat race.

Best decision I ever made..

The job market is different now. I see a lot of companies listing that they want EITHER a college degree OR equivalent experience. You have the experience. You'll find something.

Sorry to hear of this new development, btw. You'll be ok, though.

As enticing as I think the islands would be, I fear I would die of starvation and lose my mind without creature comforts.

I need cheeseburgers and A/C

Now coming over for 6 months while I get my head straight, I could envision that.

Look at it this way.. if you could find a way to make even $200 a week on the internet, even just selling something on ebay... you could get by pretty well here.

We get by on that, and even less at times with a family of four kids.

6 years ago, At age 56. The pinnacle of my career, I was let go.
Same reason as you are going through now.
High pay = plenty of other low-pay bodies to take over. "Industry can't support your pay. You have a better opportunity to get a job than the others still here" Crock of doodoo, but that's life. End of the economic crash.

I was a pcb designer, with over 30 years experience.
Oh well, sore point for me, but life goes on.

Took me 9 months to find a job in the CEM market (same job you just lost).
It paid 33% less than what I used to make, and its all-out crazy from the minute I get in until I go home. But, it pays the bills.

Before I got my current job, I worked at an Indian Casino for 1/3rd of what I used to make as a designer, cleaning up after the slobs that inhabit Casinos. It was still higher pay than Unemployment pay.

Hang in there bud, and use your associate contacts for reference.
Hopefully you didn't burn any bridges throughout your career.
Get on Linked-in, and get your resume out there.

I got nothing for the divorce problem, sorry.
Good luck!
