Absolutely devastating. As a 53 year old white male with no college education I am about the least marketable person on the planet.

The level of "screwed" I am right now is immeasurable.
You got this man. Hang in there.

1997 was my low year. Within a few months my fiance ran away with a good friend of mine, I closed my business after 15 years due to low sales, and I had to sell my house because I couldn't afford the mortgage. Barely broke even.

Unemployed, lonely, and homeless at 40.

You'll bounce back, I did.

Very sorry to hear this, but when life give you lemons, make lemonade. Think of it this way, wife wants a divorce, not having a job will play in your favor when it comes to alimony. Maybe you can seek reverse alimony. At a minimum, a judge would find it hard to put a big number on you.

Just thinking outside of the box.

Frankly, college is overrated. I went (very little) and I couldn't stomach the constant far left political diatribe by the professors, it was useless. Some of these fresh college graduates can barely tie their own shoes. A piece of paper can't show your worth.

Good luck with everything, it's gonna be fine.

A coworker of mine years ago was having domestic issues. He got separated one week and lost his job three weeks later. His marital issues consumed him and affected his performance at work which ultimately lead to his dismissal. Same thing probably would have happened to me if I were in his shoes..

Keep your head up, network, file for unemployment, and be open to relocation to maximize your options. A fresh start into a new city one the heals of a divorce wouldn't be a bad thing.

I'm pulling for you.

OP, you have my sincere condolences. I concur with others here that a college diploma is typically not a big asset in today's economy. Another plus is that you work in a technical field, so if there are jobs to be found anywhere you're in a good field.

I don't know how close you are to bringing the divorce to an end, but not having a job through no fault of your own is a blessing. If your wife has a job and/or savings, you could escape separate maintenance and alimony. I don't know if you and her have kids. Apply for unemployment compensation now, not later. It's not anything to be ashamed of; your employer and you contributed to the fund for this very purpose.

Please tell us more about what income you're used to, whether you'd relocate, and any other info about your employability. This is a network after all.

LinkedIn.

Use it.

It is a new world for companies looking for potential hires.

On a more important note. Keep your head up. My dad went through a similar time not all that long ago. You'll get through.

Very sorry. Take a day or two to get your head together. Look at it as a fresh start.

I got laid-off in 2002, best thing that ever happened to me, career-wise.

I'll echo this. I HATED signing up for unemployment but we needed it to make sure bills were getting paid. Unfortunately my wife's job isn't looking so secure so we might have to do so again. It SUCKS but you do what you gotta do.

Yes. First time I have ever been laid off. I was unemployed once before many years ago, but the company closed so I at least had some time to prepare. This caught me off guard. I knew business was down, but I thought I was better insulated. WRONG.
