A friend of mine put a 350 Corvette motor into his late 70's Toyota Land Cruiser. They actually made kits for this. One night we were tooling around in it, me and a chick in the back seat with the top down, he and another buddy in the front. There was a guy walking across the street ahead of us and my friend decided it would be fun to scare him a bit. He revved the engine and dumped the clutch, trying to chirp the big tires. Instead the bolts connecting the drive shaft to the rear differential gave up, and the drive shaft beat the hell out of the street and the metal under my seat. This did have the desired effect of scaring the pedestrian, as he dove into a sticker bush.
We disconnected the drive shaft from the transfer case, locked the front hubs, and drove it to the passenger's shop where we found new bolts and were back on the road 30 minutes later. |

I can neither confirm nor deny.
The problem is that she's smart enough to know that there will be SOME expense, but not necessarily how much. She gets even more suspicious and gives me the stink eye if there is no charge. Luckily, POW! is a goofball joke, and not a reality (unless I do something REALLY stupid). |

I had an 8.25 posi rear in my Dodge work van, and so of course the lateral bolt that held the cross shaft in place came out, and the obvious was the shaft coming out and into the pinion but solid, at about 35 mph in traffic, obviously the thing slid to a hault, person behind me was PISSED....but missed by a BCH.....I had to back up a hair to release the mess, and drove home on one spider at about 5 mph for a few miles....made more noise than an open header..... I grew a 9.25 posi from a buddy's old tow car....

the Getrag carrier is a technological wonder. It's weakness is of the aluminum case. Keeping the weight low was a top priority for GM; I've seen serious cracking of the Getrag... whole chunks of the case missing.
Someone makes a brace - specifically for the C5/C6 Corvettes - that supposedly helps. The internals, though... are one area that seemed to hold up well. |

That's actually the twin car to mine... but no, not much luck in either case. Mine is LS powered, the other is SBC powered (notice the sound difference in the videos). Mine actually had the harmonic balancer come off last time out. No clue how that is even possible unless the bolt was either too loose or left out all together and it somehow held as long as it did with just the press fit. Of course it took some other things with it when it let go.
Both of them are being torn down to nothing and essentially rebuilt from the ground up this winter. Tired of other people's half-assery. The good news is that I have lots and lots of take-off NASCAR Cup parts sitting in the shop to replace the off the shelf crap that keeps failing. Most of it from either Roush or Penske. The quality of those parts is unreal. |

FYI, that Getrag unit - requires a special set of tools and guages - if replacing gears & such. When i ugraded to the 3.42... I just bought a complete carrier, new.
I didn't want to purchase the special tool-kit; and really did not feel i had the expertise to do it right the first time. R&R on that unit it a major PIA; and didn't want to be taking it off & on a few times until I got-it-right. Oh, info on the "tilt-down" removal method at the bottom of this page: http://tim-yvonne.com/mikemercury/342.htm |

Going through the engine on my car after the balancer came off just to make sure. Getting new bearings and valve springs regardless. Adding/replacing coolers, pumps, hoses, pretty much the entire electrical harness. New oil sump and remote filter setup from Roush, all new carbon fiber ductwork to the coolers... already have a new Cup rear gear in it and went through the trans, new driveshaft, etc after it failed. There won't be a screw left that we haven't touched when all is said and done. The other car is getting pretty much the same treatment for everything but the engine. It'll be an adventure for sure. |

btw, GMPD sells (or sold at one time) a complete Getrag 3.73 carrier. It had a beefier case and more/deeper cooling fins. I think that is what the C5R team was using.
When I looked into that one (back in 2002) is was like $1800 new But it was complete; in bolt-on form. |

Yea... but there's not much I would rather be doing than wrenching on a race car.
Heading to PRI in a few weeks to see if there are any other things to spend money on. Performance Racing Industry |
