Default [Boat PICS] Introducing the SS Critterus

Here it is. '82 Excaliber 38' cigarette boat. I need pics of the cabin but it's in great shape. I just need to put the rear seats back onto the deck because they removed when the new headers were put on the engines a few months ago.

twin 509 GM motors. The owner said they were experimental racing engines installed some time in the late 90's. I'm not sure the specs on them or what was experimental, but they run great and he has every piece of paperwork dating back to when the boat was purchased new. All the electronics and hydraulics are in great shape, too.

The guy is 74 years old and can't take the boat out any longer so he decided to sell it. Since my family is friends with him, he's letting it go for $20K with the trailer which has also been refurbed with exception to the wench and master cylinder for the brakes. No big deal as they still work.

Yes, I know it stands for Break Out Another Thousand, but it's what I want. I'm going in half with my parents on this and then I'll buy off the other half next year. Despite taking about $750.00+ to fill all four tanks at 240 gallons, I have plenty of friends (and especially Hottie McHotterson slims) who want to pitch in for gas all throughout this summer.

I predict many hours cruising the beach and intercoastal waterway here in Jacksonville this summer and fall. Parents are already making plans for a run to the Bahamas and I might get a date date and join them.

And I will be keeping this docked on the water, but on a lift so as not to let grime and barnacles grow on the hull.

Now for pics (and yes, I do need to put a cleaning on it):

And here's a pic to put the length into perspective.

Nice. But your going to need a bigger truck.

If that monster gets 1 mile per gallon I will be amazed.

I have a place to keep it on a lift on Doctors Lake with access to the St. Johns River about 5 miles from my house.

The current owner says it drinks about 13 gallons an hour at a cruising speed of 45mph. That's not bad at all.

Hope you had a survey on that. Also, go take a coast guard class.

No way. My fuel efficient 22 footer with a four banger would burn about that. At 45 mph, you will be burning close to 45 gph, and that's if the motors are tuned.

Just make a run for square grouper and you won't worry about the fuel bill.

No, I've actually seen the stats on it and trust this guy. I've been on it before and that's what it was drinking. 13gph.

You mentioned four tanks. 13gph per tank sounds more like what he was telling you.

But it does look like a blast to take out with some hotties.

I dont know jack shiat about boats but if I was looking to buy this I would pay someone who really really really knows boats to check it out first and verify the current owner's claims and the condition. This thing could be a great buy or it could be a true money pit

No, like I said, I've been out on it and seen the stats. 13gph is right on. The motors are tuned very well and the boat is definitely not under powered. I'll collect my own data when I put it back into the water, though (and that includes pics of slims in itty bitty teenie weenie bikinis..

Sorry, that's simply impossible. By a huge margin. Your about to have a very rude awakening. I'd strongly suggest you pay for a marine survey before buying this boat. If the guy is willing to lie to you about fuel consumption, there are probably lots of other things that need to be looked at too.

There are a number of folk here that own boats and will be sure to chime in. They have zero vested interrest in this particular sale so their input should be considered impartial and only given as helpful to you

Either way, I'm still happy with the purchase. I'm very good with boats, and know my way around them. Been in fresh water and open ocean with many various boats my whole life. My family and I know what we are doing when it comes to stuff like this

That you think you are going to get more that 1 mpg on that boat makes me question all of that.

You need to put your pride in check and stop this purchase. Moderate use of this boat will run you north of 20k a year. Hell, a run to the Bahamas and back will cost you close to 7k just in fuel.

Pay for a survey. If you already paid for boat, put a stop payment on the check tomorrow.

This is the best advise you will ever get on this forum.

If you can't afford that, I'd have to agree. That thing is a pig.
If you can however, wahoo!!! have fun!
