Top 6 things Republicans consider more important than job creation

Top 6 things Republicans consider more important than job creation | The Raw Story

WASHINGTON ~ Republicans won dramatic victories last November by promising to mitigate high unemployment.

"This coming election is about one issue: jobs," to-be Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said weeks before election day.
"It's about jobs that were promised to the American people by the current administration, and were never delivered."

But in the three months since taking over the House and expanding their voices in the Senate, Republicans have yet to pass a jobs-focused bill, instead prioritizing numerous social and cultural issues that are unrelated to job creation -- and have little or no chance of becoming policy.

Here are six such legislative goals they've been hard at work on.

1) Curtailing Abortion Rights

A top priority for Republicans, H.R. 3, "The No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act" is on its way to passage in the House after successfully maneuvering through the Judiciary and Ways And Means Committees.

Though the GOP stripped out some of its most controversial provisions -- such as denying exemptions to a woman even in cases of rape, incest and when her life is in danger -- the measure raises costs for businesses by eliminating tax deductions on employee health insurance plans that cover abortion.

2) Defunding Planned Parenthood

TAKE ACTIONPetitions by Change.org|Get Widget|Start a Petition »The House last month approved a measure 240-185, sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), to cut off all $317 million in Title X funding for Planned Parenthood and all other health care providers that offer abortions.

Under the law, Title X money cannot be used for abortion, so -- beyond the shot across Planned Parenthood's bow -- Republicans effectively voted to strip funding enjoyed by mostly low-income women for medical services like cancer screenings, breast exams and HIV tests.

3) Defunding NPR

In the wake of James O'Keefe's highly edited video sting that defamed National Public Radio executives, House Republicans last week called an emergency session to push through legislation that eliminates taxpayer funds to the radio-based news agency.
It passed 228-192 on a partisan vote, winning over no Democrats and losing 7 Republicans.

4) Investigating American Muslims

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-NY) held a controversial hearing two weeks ago about the extent of radicalization within the American Muslim community.
Though even critics admitted that the xenophobic undertones were relatively mild compared to what they expected, the hearings had their fair share of bizarre statements.

5) Declaring English As America's Official Language

Liberating Americans from ever needing to learn another language, Republicans this month introduced the "English Language Unity Act," which would declare English as the official language of the U.S.

The bill declares that "all citizens should be able to read and understand generally the English language text of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of the Constitution."

6) Reaffirming The "In God We Trust" Motto

The House Judiciary Committee last week approved a GOP resolution reaffirming the motto of the United States as "In God We Trust" -- you know, just in case people forgot what America was all about.

Big Govt. Conservatism ~ 3-day wait for abortion becomes law in S.D.

State has only one clinic ... rights advocates say they'll appeal

3-day wait for abortion becomes law in S.D. - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.com

PIERRE, S.D. ~ Women who want an abortion in South Dakota will face the longest waiting period in the nation — three days — and have to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions under a measure signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

Within minutes of Daugaard's announcement that he had signed the measure, abortion rights groups said they planned to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which one said could create particular hardships for women who live in rural areas hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the state's only abortion clinic in Sioux Falls.

Daugaard, who gave no interviews after signing the bill, said in a written statement that he had conferred with state attorneys who will defend the law in court and a sponsor who has pledged to raise private money to finance the state's court fight.

Officials have said estimated the cost of defending the law at $1.7 million to $4.5 million.

I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives," the Republican governor said in the statement.

"I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this three-day period to make good choices."

About half the states, including South Dakota, now have 24-hour waiting periods, but the state's new law is the first of its kind in having a three-day waiting period and requiring women to seek counseling at pregnancy help centers, said Elizabeth Nash of the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights.

The law will certainly make it harder for some women to get abortions, said Kathi Di Nicola, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, which runs the clinic in Sioux Falls.

Women could have to drive there several times to schedule an abortion, visit a crisis pregnancy center and then get an abortion, she said.

"It would most certainly be a barrier to women who have to travel. South Dakota is a rural state," Di Nicola said.
"Many women who are seeking abortion care already have to take time off work, arrange for child care."

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota said they will ask a judge to strike down the measure as unconstitutional.

Supporters of the measure say the Planned Parenthood clinic gives women little information or counseling before they have abortions done by doctors flown in from out of state and the bill will help make sure women are not being coerced into abortions by boyfriends or relatives.

"Women need to just be reminded of the fact there is a natural, legal relationship between them and their child," said Rep. Roger Hunt, the main sponsor of the law.

The law, which takes effect July 1, says an abortion can only be scheduled by a doctor who has personally met with a woman and determined she is voluntarily seeking an abortion. The procedure can't be done until at least 72 hours after that first consultation.

Before getting an abortion, a woman also will have to consult with a pregnancy help center to get information about services available to help her give birth and keep a child.
The state will publish a list of pregnancy help centers, all of which seek to persuade women to give birth.

Leslie Unruh, founder of the Alpha Center, a pregnancy help center in Sioux Falls, said many women have said they would never have had abortions if they had first received counseling at such a center.

"If we truly want to have less abortions, let's give these women the 72 hours they need to make this decision on their own without being coerced," Unruh said.

Jan Nicolay, co-chair of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, which has opposed restrictions on abortion, said the measure would invade women's privacy by forcing them to go to crisis pregnancy centers that are sham clinics set up to dissuade women from getting abortions.

The law could violate federal requirements that protect the privacy of medical records, and it assumes that women cannot make decisions about abortions after talking with their families and pastors, she said.

"Now, despite the fact that South Dakotans have repeatedly spoken on issues of government interference in private decisions, we will once more be pulled into a protracted legal battle that will potentially cost the state millions in tax dollars," Nicolay said in a written statement.

Hunt said the state would only have to pay legal costs if it lost the lawsuit, and the money would be well spent to try to prevent the 800 or so abortions done each year in South Dakota.
But, he said, donations are already coming into to defend the law. Some people have pledged large sums, while others are giving $25 or $50, he said.

"They want to put their money where their mouth is in the sense of protecting unborn children," Hunt said.

The South Dakota Legislature has passed several other measures restricting abortions in the past decade.

Voters rejected statewide ballot measures in 2006 and 2008 that would have banned most abortions in the state.
Those measures sought to provoke a court challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion in the United States.

A 2005 law requiring that women be told that an abortion will end the life of a human being has yet to be fully implemented because it remains tied up in a court fight.

When will you get over the defeat and get behind America?

Your bitterness and anger provides nothing positive to build on for all Americans. When Liberals criticized Bush, they were anti-America and Anti-American; so what ever happen to that belief and style of thinking?

Community organizer for the world, he is better at making jobs in Brazil then in the country he was elected to lead. He does have a job platform for American jobs, no he just gave 3 billion to help Brazil drill for oil so we can buy it from them and more $$ and jobs are not in America.

The postive is I am still a free American and get to express my feelings, unlike when I was in the military, as a free American I am thankful for the military that I have this ability to speak out against the uncontrolled spending that has America headed down the path to be the next Greece

Oh my points on this subject are the real facts and you have to divert with old news on Obama I have never brought up. According to Nancy this new law would create 4 million jobs, not so far, but the admin is creating jobs in Brazil as the world community organizer

Here’s an idea, when you Republicans get a chance to Vote for the Presidency again, vote for someone who will bring in 4 Million Jobs every 10 months. Remember, we’ll be monitoring based on the exact same standards. BTW; got any idea who your 4 Million Jobs every 10 months candidate will be? We’re all just dying to find out.

Sorry guys. While somewhat insincere given the source (the left), this is a valid criticism.

Where are the bills completely reforming our tax code? Where are the bills cutting spending by a Trillion dollars (or at least hundreds of billions)? Where are the bills simplifying the regulatory burden on business?

YES, the hypocritical Democrats in the Senate and the Whitehouse will vote them down. SO WHAT. Republicans control the house, they were elected to do a job, they should be doing it no matter how in vain it may be.

It's 2011. As long as they did their part, the liberal media and democrats would not be able to get away with this crap. The American people would know the Pubs tried and were thwarted by the Senate and by Obama.

Instead they're wasting our time and money.

As far as I'm concerned, the verdict is in. John Boehner is NOT the man to lead our party, and IS IN FACT the same guy who was at the helm during the 2000s and went right along with Bush's country club, big government "republicanism"

3 Month Grade for the Republican house --- D. The Obamacare repeal bill spares them from getting an F.

Nothing will (or even can get done) until after 2012 election. The way I see it...the Pubs don't want things to get better so they have more leverage for the POTUS election. The Dems don't want things to get better so they can whine how the pubs have been in for two years with no noticeable increase in jobs. We the people get the ass-shafting for another few years whilst rich congress and senate people continue their whirlwind perks, siphoning of public money, acquiescing to public unions, and in general fecking up just about anything they touch. But thank goodness they straightened out doping in baseball. Phfew!!! I was getting worried there.

However, the pubs do have a good idea in removing regulations, lowering taxes, and instilling back into our nation the "freedom" spirit vs the "we aren't exceptional" crap the Dems espouse.

And to the OP? Are you really that dim that you'd expect millions of jobs to spring forth in 2 months of Pubs being in place. Remember they weren't even seated until after Jan 1. However, Obama HAS been in place for 2 years...and the dem congress at the time for a little over 4. Where did that get us thus far?

I'll friendly wager you $5 though that the country has a better chance of coming back with Pubs in charge than Dems. Most pubs have owned a business and realize how to operate one. Unlike Dems - who apparently have no clue that you shouldn't spend more than you make.

I didn't say all the regulations. However, when there is so much red tape to get something done...that it can't be economically feasible to do...thats a problem.

And at this point in my life and perspective there is no politician that has the American peoples back.
