Only the rich people had dirt. We couldn't afford all that fanciness.

Five brothers and sisters and no Dad. Not having a dad in the 50's made you stand out. Mom never went on any Govt. Asst. and worked 16 hours a day. We all had jobs at 15 and worked our ass off. All my brothers and sister graduated from college. I got drafted so i didn't go to college and i didn't even graduate from high school, i worked full time. We ate rice, potatoes and noodles seven days a week. My son's grew up without a mother. I raised them since they were babies. Graduated from college and both make well over six figures. No victim mentality. Because nobody GAF about your situation so you make it happen. No High School education and retired at 58 and i'am stuck living on the beach in Southern California.

I only remember good times during this period before shipping off to the Army then College.

And you turned out to be a good husband and father. You don't know shit about music or food but i attribute it to you being trailer trash.

Most of that generation and my parents generation worked. School was a luxury if you could get up to the 10th grade. I didn't graduate because i worked all through school and lived on my own. My mom married another man that hated kids so i hit the road until drafted.

Not quite dirt poor but still poor but as others have said, me and my brother never really realized it until we got much older. Parents had to file bankruptcy twice but I didn't know about it until many years later. We knew we didn't have some of the stuff others had but it didn't bother us at all.

We had very good years and some very bad years. I never really knew it at the time, but we did hunt and fish for all of our meat for a reason.

I think I went through similar times. We were poor but I didn't know it.

I'm not poor so much now, but this administration is trying real hard to get me there. I made less money this year than in the last 5.

Definitely dirt poor..... My dad had to quit school at 16 to take care of his family when his father (my grandfather) died, so he never finish high school. He worked as a printer his adult life, not a lot of money, and often worked a second or third part time job to make sure we had enough money to eat. He thought my mom should be at home to watch my brother and I. The only new car I remember them owning was a 1969 VW Beetle, which was totaled a couple of years later by a teenager with no insurance. He taught me many things, such as a great work ethic, how fix things around the house (they couldn't really afford to have someone fix them) and importance of family. There were many used cars, tires, parts, etc, but they always made sure we had food on the table and clean clothes. They couldn't afford to send us to college, so if my brother and I wanted to (which we did) it was all on us. I can't thank them enough for what they taught us....

Not exactly dirt poor but not good for a couple years. My mother 2nd husband was a school teacher who became a bad alcoholic. This was aound 64-66. I was 10 and baby sister was 2.

We went on welfare. I remember it like it was yesterday. One of the main foods they issued at the times was a form of what we see today as tuna casserole.I hate that shit.

Grandparents lived about an hour away. we moved in with them for 6 months, mom found a good job and things slowly got much better

Not dirt poor but hand me downs were regularly and graciously accepted. Parents divorced when I was 8 so things got "tight".

Always had a roof over my head and food to eat so absolutely NO complaints at all.

Speaking of welfare, I don't think we ever got food stamps but I do remember getting those free huge square logs of cheese every so often.
