I bought a refurbished iMac from Apple back around 2011 & you couldn't tell it from new. I still use it, never a problem. I've recommended their refurbs to a few friends, who've all reported the same experience. The savings aren't huge, but may be significant.

I had an acquaintance who had been an Apple employee. He said that Apple employees always bought the refurbs since they were typically returned from trade shows, classes, etc., & had very little use.

(Note that my experience is with refurbished units directly from Apple, not from a 3rd party.)

I’ve bought refurb units from Apple, without issue. If you must buy new, check out bhvideo.com. They often run deep discounts on Apple products. Also check out adorama.com. Appleinsider.com often displays lists of which retailers have the best discounts. Best Buy might price match the online stores.

Refurbished? Depends on what year and what the specs are.

remember, with Mac, devices are obsolete at 5 years old and one day from the production date. They are unsupported after 7 years and one day unless in CA which requires parts to be supplied for 9 years total.

Why not spend the $$$ and go new if you need to get another one?

Bullshit DJ. How do you define “obsolete” my main production Mac is a 2009 Mac Pro tower with 12 processing cores, 48 gigs of ram, 4 TB SSD plus RAID. I updated firmware to 5.1 so I’m running current system. With two 27” Apple Cinima monitors of equal age.

I leave the machine running 24/7 and have since I bought it new. I have two of them! Plus a 2013 laptop that works fine and a 2009 unibody Mac pro (that one is rough but still works fine, mostly beat up from austere conditions filming.)

I understand that Apple won’t support them after 9 years but I’ve never used Apple support. I even have a 1996 IMac that runs as well as the day I bought it, although it can’t do anything because it is stuck at system 9.

I can’t speak for new macs. Seems they have turned to shit like everything.

I have a 11 year old Macbook Pro that still works great, although I get no more o/s updates. Additionally, I have an 11 year old iMac I bought for $20, wiped it and installed Ubuntu, now my kids have a machine to play with and learn how to use a computer.

My employer purchases us Macbook Pros and they get replaced every 4 years. I honestly wish they would let us purchase them when it is time to replace because they are 100% still in prefect condition fo any day-to-day operations for what I do in my job and personal life.

It's not bullshit and that's how Apple classifies them. Hell, that question even shows up on the ACMT exam.

I'm not saying they won't work, but I have seen some that are outside of that window that broke. Parts were expensive.

If you do decide to buy a new MacBook Pro at an Apple retail store, note that they are now taking your old MBP on trade.
