Default Guess the problem game!

Time for another round of "What's wrong with my car"!

Started to notice a noise coming from the car when I was driving the other day. It sounded like maybe my rear tires were getting to that point, sort of like a faint air raid siren in the distance. I did notice however that if I was going say 50mph and let off the gas the noise stopped and if I just barely touched the throttle it would come back.

Today I took the car out and the noise was more pronounced but seemed to still go away when I let off the throttle. But then I started hearing some intermittent growling noise from the back when I would come to a stop. As I was driving it back home it seemed like the noise would still go away when I let off the throttle but at lower speeds (30-45) it would sometimes pulse.

Tires aren't rubbing (they used to), no leaks anywhere and I changed the trans filter and fluid a couple thousand miles ago. I have a vig 3600 converter and a 3 rib Z06 rear end. I have never done a burn out in the car and I've only down shifted the trans into 1 or 2 a few times going slow down main street so I could sound cooler. Oh yeah, I have about 35k on the car.

I've never had a car where the rear end, trans or wheel bearings went out (I know, I'm not driving them hard enough) so I'm not really sure what to think.

With all that said.... Whatcha think and what could I do to narrow down the possibilities??

Thanks

I have had ring gears do that in other cars/trucks before. That is what it sounds like to me rear end problems.

You are probably right. I found a video at the other place and it sounded like mine but worse. I also saw some posts that said gear whine was a common problem with the Z06 3:42s, I don't know if that's true but that's what they said.

I've put almost 10k miles on the car since I got it so it seems odd that it would start to have problems now. Looks like I'll have to start doing some research on the subject.

If sounds like it's getting worse, try adding more limited slip additive. Sometimes that quiets them down.Or changing out the fluid completely.

I'll try changing the fluid and see if that does anything.

Thanks for the input.

What did you find out?

gear whine is common in these cars, but could it be the fuel pump?

I changed the fluid, did about 15 minutes worth of figure eights and drove it home but the whine was still present. I don't think it's the fuel pump as it only does it when I'm moving. I might take it for a longer drive but I doubt anything is going to get better.
I talked to a guy at DTE and although he couldn't say without looking at the car he thought it could be the spring broke or the clutches are going. He also said I could probably drive it as long as I didn't do donuts and stuff like that.

I really don't want to swap the rear on jack stands in my garage by myself but it would be a fun job. DTE wants $500 to do the swap plus it's a 5 hour drive so I'll have to think about what I'm going to do from here.

With such a major job like this I would let them do the swap,$500 is not that bad. Good luck with it Munch.
