Default Welfare programs, my argument, your thoughts?

This is was a closing argument I made when discussing welfare programs with a liberal friend of mine. He never could come up with a comeback...intact he still won't reply to me, what's your thoughts?

"Welfare programs have out grown our ability to pay for them, theres some very tough choices and discussions we have to have, unfortunately much of it will effect the poor, but if it doesn't get addressed now we'll just spend money on it utill the US government can't borrow anymore by then it'll be too late for sensible cuts."

Sounds good...
Did you hear on the news yesterday about how they are drug testing those who want to apply for welfare? the individual needs to pay for the drug test and if he passes it he receives all the benefits of welfare plus a reimbursement for the test. If he fails, he will not be eligible to apply for welfare for another year. About time.

Yup, what a novel concept, it disgusts me that it's taken this long.

About time. Already being done here in Florida.

Quote:
Governor Rick Scott signed a law this week requiring Floridians to submit urine, blood, or hair samples for drug testing before they could receive any cash aid from the state. Those testing positive will be banned from receiving aid for six months, though they can secure assistance for their children by designating someone else—who must also pass a drug test—to collect the money, the Miami Herald reports.

“The goal of this is to make sure we don’t waste taxpayers money,” Scott says. “Hopefully more people will focus on not using illegal drugs.” But the Florida ACLU has already filed a lawsuit claiming the law violates welfare recipients' fourth amendment rights. “It’s not even random drug testing,” one official tells WJHG. “It's drug testing of all people who apply for public assistance and you can't do that without suspicion of something.”

Michigan is about to sign a bill that affords people 4 years max of assistance before cutting them off.

I like this idea as well.

AWw but it's the economy and Bush's fault! There's just no jobs for a $90 per hour, high school drop out, Union worker to install lug nuts. They were all sent over sea's and it's my right to sit on my butt till I feel like working another job, even though I'll never get paid that kind of money again. And since it's Bush's fault! The Government owes me this money.

I can live with 4 years. For example... a single mother of 4 realizes her poor choices... takes college courses or begins a vocational training program - but since these take time to complete so that she is viable to employ, I am ok with assisting her and her children. Provided she's doing the right thing and trying to better herself. Although I will never like the idea of cash assistance or food stamps. Both are misused. I'd prefer food stamps cover only milk, bread, eggs, meat, vegetables. Not twinkies, ding dongs, donuts, potato chips. You want the sugary and fattening stuff? Get off the GOvt teet and provide them for yourself.

I'm sorry, the Government is NOT in the business of re-training people who've made poor choices. You make some poor choices growing up, and suddenly find yourself with 3 dependents and no way to care for them...tough shit, time to start scrubbing toilets and washing dishes. I'd suggest applying for some scholarships to the local community college or online school.

That is a noble thought, but in how many instances is this actually the case?
Not many.

Very very few I'm sure...though I've no way of knowing. I do recall when I did some charity work (financial counseling poor families to purchase houses in Detroit) that there were maybe 5-7 families out of 100 that I could actually tell were interested in climbing out of their predicament.

I agree. We shouldn't finance a persons poor choices. However, the christian in me likes to think people deserve a second chance. We all make bad decisions. Its learning from them that I admire.

I absolutely agree with you...but it isn't the governments place to give those 2nd chances. You want to help somebody improve their chances...do so through a far more efficient privately funded non-profit, or church based program. The .gov needs to GTFO of funding poor choices.

Define what you mean by welfare. Are you including social security and medicare? Programs people have paid into? Unemployment, another program paid into by employers.

Be specific. What do you for the sake of this discussion, call welfare?

Social Security for retirees is not a welfare program. Many of the disability based Social Security benefits are welfare programs.

26 weeks of Unemployment is not a welfare program, anything beyond the 26 weeks of insurance is a welfare program.

Medicare <insurance for the retired correct?> Is borderline a welfare program due to what you've put in isn't any where near the benefits it pays.
Medicaid<for the poor> Is a welfare program.
Section 8
Food Stamps, ect.

I never said I wanted to eliminate any of the programs, but if we don't re-vamp, them now it's just going to be worse later on.

Welfare. The liberals best way to get voters.

Liberals want Darwinism taught in schools but prevent it from happening in real life.

Welfare, Food stamps and all non contributory social programs should be ended.

All of the "Contributory" programs should be run as per the current insurance laws of this country or be abolished as well. As set up how they are nothing more than a ponzi scheme.

While that all sounds great...no changes to welfare programs will ever be made if the best we can do is attack the concept. Attaching to and attacking welfare programs with liberals, and using the description as if it were a foul word, gets us no where, hell you might as well be starting more welfare programs.

Start with a problem we can all agree on, and go from there..unfortunately I don't think we can even agree on a problem right now.

5% less taxes on just the rich, is NOT causing these welfare programs budgets to bloat.
