Nod firewood

Had a coworker come over with a "real" bar on his chainsaw ( Stihl with a 48" bar ) to drop the hickory tree that I took a limb off this spring.

The bottom of the tree was a bit over 3' wide so the 48" bar just made it.

First pic is from the spring.

2nd shows some of the wood that been cut

3rd & 4th show the only damage, a mulberry tree that was in the drop zone. They're hardy, it'll grow back or it'll be firewood too.

The 18" bar on my Husky 345 just makes it on the main truck if I cut from each side. I'll finish later in the week and then wrap a strap around it and turn it over with the Suburban to finish the cuts.

I'll think we'll be set for firewood for a little while

Exactly. Dad had 4 large trees that were in danger of falling on his house removed about 4 years ago. We rented a splitter and two days later had a shit ton of fire wood. Every night during winter he has a fire going (dogs love it and he is a bit of a fire bug like me) and still hasn't used 1/3rd of the pile.

It's all Black Jack. Great for cooking and the bark is great for getting the smoky flavor, but some people say it's bad to use in a fire place. Ehh... we haven't noticed any side effects (I think).

Great burning wood but would also have been nice to have a few of the lower slabs for end tables.

Would have been nice not to have chain ( swingset chain) in the main part of the trunk too.

New chains for the Husky should be here Friday

Second video, wedges were used. That's how my friend Hunter "finished" bringing down my hickory tree. Much safer that way.

So who wants to split and stack it? Beer on me
30+ years ago, a good friend of mine had a cabin in upstate NY, heated only by a wood-burning stove. His brother would go up in September and drop enough trees for one winter, and drag them from the woods back to near the cabin. My buddy and I, and anyone else we could talk into going, would go up for a weekend in early October, and attempt to cut and split an entire winter's worth of wood. We would split from dawn to dark on Saturday and Sunday, beer on him of course! Sometimes we would succeed, but sometimes needed a second weekend.

It was fun, and if you were close, I could definitely be talked into a good long splitting session in exchange for beer. But now that I am starting to push 60 years old, I don't think my back or hands could do a dawn to dark thing. A long afternoon? Sure.

Have fun with it!
