Default deep fryer?

What say..buy a purpose built deep fryer, or just get a big cast iron pot when the need arises?

I agree.
I had a home version deep fryer. Problem is they are just not big enough and can make a hell of a mess.

A deep cast iron pot and a wire scoop or basket works just as well if not better.

We have an actual deep fryer at the house - it's nice to know what the exact temp is......basket makes it easier for frying too.
