Correct. Our current immigration works (tho it could use a bit of tweaking like most things). We filled out all the paperwork and gathered reams of documentation so we didn't have problems with the actual process. It's a little slow but there are reasons for that and I don't really think that's a bad thing.
The first set of paperwork was over an inch thick, the second was 2 inches thick and the last bit for our AOS was another inch or so thick. In additon, you make and keep 2 complete sets of everything.

They need to streamline it but government bureaucracy won't allow for it. Like your situation. A simple background check should have sufficed.

Winna.

1) Make the system easier for folks who want to come here. It shouldn't take years of sponsorship and paperwork to come here and get your citizenship
2) Provide a system for migrant workers to come here for seasonal work, etc.
3) Require folks to not have lived here for a year to begin qualifications for either of the above
4) Prosecute, severely, anyone who is here illegally.
5) Prosecute, severely, any company that hires folks without the proper paper work.

Was that after he got his K1? If not, then either we are talking about two different things or something fishy is going on. I'm talking about the H1-B process, which takes YEARS to complete and if for some reason you get laid off you have to start all over again from scratch. Except that unlike moving from one job to another to improve your situation, when that happens you are back at square one working for crap pay for the company to sponsor your H1-B. It's embarrassing just how bad it is.

OK. So for all the folks that want to marry into this country, it sounds like it's pretty easy. For everyone else, they have to spend literally years trying to legally come here and at any point in the process that there's even the slightest hiccup, they potentially get to start all over again. That's not what I call a system that works.

I wouldn't say that. It's taken us over 18 months to get to this point.
As far as other avenues.....is coming here a right or a priviledge?

My next door neighbor came here from Brazil as a nanny. It took her three months to clear all the obstacles.

I don't know that it's either. It's a necessity IMO and our system needs to be optimized. We can't sit around casting stones about how illegal immigration is this great atrocity and focus on punishment for those here illegally when it's so damned difficult for most folks to legally come here and work. Reform needs to be more than just build a fence or kill them if they are here illegally. The entire process needs reform IMO.

so how would you go about it? All those forms still need to be completed. All the background checks need to be completed. All the sponsorship forms and income documentation needs to be done. Quotas still need to be met/enforced.

There's the problem. I'm not convinced that we do need to do all those things exactly like we do it today. That's why I say we need total reform. Not just part of the immigration process. The entire process from start to finish.

You didn't say how she came here. That's why I asked. You simply implied that it was easy as cake. I guess what folks need to do to come here then is marry into it or do whatever this nanny did. Because that's apparently the key. Please, elaborate on the requirements.

We most certainly DO need all that information collected and all those checks done. There might be a better way, but if the government is involved don't count on them finding it.
