Just thought those of you who think we aren't doing anything about it should know.

Of all of the illegal immigrants in the U.S., 62% were originally from Mexico (no surprise). All of the other groups are at 5% or below:
Mexico - 62%
El Salvador - 5%
Guatemala - 4%
Honduras - 3%
Philippines - 2% (obviously a border control issue)
India - 2% (same)
Korea - 2% (same)
Ecuador - 2%
Brazil - 1%
China - 1% (see "Philippines")
Everyone else - 15%

The total number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped from 11,780,000 in Jan 2007, to 10,750,000 in Jan 2009. Good job Obama.
I agree

You sure it's all about boots on the ground and not a crashing economy with fewer and fewer jobs drawing people in?

Could be both, but usually the economy doesn't affect the Drug trade. When the drugies run out of money, they just steel for those who have it.

What does that have to do with Illegal Immigration? Sure there's drugs coming across the border too...but I think it's safe to say the majority of the illegal aliens are here for work, not drug money.

By "realistic solution" are you are referring to the liberal plans that pretty much just make them all legal, no matter what?

No … I think the requirements here is that they; being the Elected Servants, work and compromise to execute progress on an issue that has gone nowhere for decades. It’s time for all of them to start acting like Adults and remove their head from ass of their benefactors and work for the best interest of all the people and not just their narrow segment.

You know what... if I read that correctly, I think we might actually be in agreement for the first time ever.

Joecool's statement about getting conservatives to vote for a solution is crap. Both sides are to blame for this steaming pile of shit that we have today. The current liberal plans are ridiculous and most that I have heard coming from the conservative side aren't much better.

I have no claim to have all the answers to solve the problem of illegal immigration but it seems to me that absolutely nothing is being done due to partisan politics. One side says secure the border first and we can talk about the rest later. The other side says protect the "honest" workers and we can take care of the border later.

What I would propose is that we do both at the same time. We need to make it as difficult as possible to work here while in an illegal immigration status. To that end we need a national ID that is as tamper proof as possible. We need tough enforcement of existing laws. You knowingly hire an illegal alien you pay a big fine, face possible jail time and the loss of your business.

Bring the troops back from Afghanistan NOW. Put as many as necessary on the border backing up the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). With that kind of manpower available illegal border crossings will slow to a trickle. ICE also will be able to better screen non border arrivals and would have the available manpower to pursue those who overstay legitimate visas, work permits, etc.

For the people already here illegally I'm not a fan of huge roundups. Instead I would use laws similar to the Arizona law to apprehend those who in some other way interact with law enforcement. What would be left would be a much smaller number than that we are currently dealing with.

Is this a perfect solution? Of course not but I think it could be politically possible and would bring us a long way toward solving the problem.

It's better than doing "nothing".

No, thanks. Any true Republican would be against that as well. RINOs would love it, though.

Personally I have no problems with an ID, but the would just give employment to more criminal activity.

I've carried a "National" ID card all my adult life. Never caused me a problem or a moment of concern.

AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD, there already IS a 'national ID card'.....in the form of renewed DRIVERS LICENSES......it has been said here in FLorida that FED regs demand we provide OEM BC, utility billings to prove addy's, and some form of photo ID.....I used my OLD d/l for the last one....

had to have a SS card also entered into system....

given some sort of uniformity among/between states conforming to the new FED standard, DE FACTO we have a national ID card....

in this age of computer, guess what?? been true for maybe 20 years now....just not all that tightly enforced...depending on the state...

guess what else, I don't think it's a threat to individuals....in and of itself...
