Default Food network........?

Just recently got the food network on cable into the house, and I have it on when surfing the net. It's great! Just watched Guy Fieri's show "Diners, Dives, and drive ins, and it was very good, but it made me hungry. There's some amazing joints out there, and he's a pretty good host, and drives a vintage Camaro Ragtop!

Triple D is a great show...lots of neat places there.

I also like Good Eats, Chopped, Iron Chef America, Challenge (Sometimes), Dinner Impossible, Restaurant Impossible...ok, I like most of everything they have on there. Right now I am hooked on Next Iron Chef.

Is it me, or does the triple D show fast-track people to the cardiac ward?
No wonder the continent is unhealthy, FAT, is the #1 ingredient!

There are lots of way to get flavor, without the traditional FAT!

The current next iron chef rocks.

I love competitive cooking.

uh...no, no there isn't. Unless you mean using 100 lbs of salt. Fat is the BEST source of flavor when dealing with meats. Seasonings are meant to ENHANCE said flavor not cover it up.

And the country is fat and unhealthy , not because of WHAT they eat, but how MUCH of it they eat. Then they sit on their fat asses watching awesome things like The Jersey Shore Marathon with 2 gallons of Ben & Jerrys and a bag o' chips while washing it all down with a diet coke.

Food Network has some good shows if a football game got boring we'd flip to it. A few of us have gone to some of the restaurants featured and the competitive cooking shows are exciting to watch. Get lots of great ideas on that channel, too.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I used to watch Food Network constantly when it was FoodTV. IMHO, the shows were much more educational when it came to food and its preparation. Now, aside from DDD, there's nothing on there that I'm really interested in.

Most of the shows are not hosted by professional chefs. Paula Deen? Rachael Ray? Sandra Lee? Give me a break! These people are basically high end caterers. Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) isn't horrible. In fact I like some of her recipes, but when she starts inviting every homo she can find in The Hamptons to decorate her dinner table she loses me. The Neely's make me want to throw up. Aaron Sanchez? Come on...where's Daniel Bouloud or Jacques Pepin? How about putting Thomas Keller up there?

And for what it's worth...DDD is a fun show, but Guy Fieri really looks and acts like a feckin' guido. Lose the bling, the spiked blonde hair and the frat-boy attitude and the show would still stand on it's own. I mean really...how many times can you say "this is money" or "this is in the top 5 sandwiches I've ever had" or "winner winner chicken dinner" and not be annoying?

FoodTV used to have people on that really knew what they were doing: Sara Moulton, David Rosengarten (wine), Mario Batali...these shows are now on in the middle of the night if at all. You can laugh all you want at Emeril for his antics and his audience full of sycophants, but the man earned his chops and is a serious chef and I learned TONS from watching him.

I want to learn about food and how to prepare it. If I want a travel show with a mouthy host, I'll go to the Travel Channel. Food Channel is better, but only marginally.

There's a lot of truth to what you said. It's become "filler", more like entertainment instead of actual preparation of food. Watching DDD is good for finding places around you to try, or places you might travel to, but as far as learning about how to make the featured food itself, it's a very short segment.

I like Ina's conversational style of demonstrating her cooking, it feels like I'm standing there in the kitchen with her. I enjoyed Sara Moulton when she was on, too. I'm not a big fan of some of these loudmouth obnoxious people in the kitchen though, makes me want to change the channel. I used to teach cooking and baking classes on evenings and weekends when I was in NY, I tried to make it fun, but I also gave out a lot of info - you have to give people their money's worth.

One thing I hate about Food Network is how everyone in every program uses a TON of salt. Personally, I think fresh, high quality ingredients speak for themselves and do not need such a large amount of salt. I can see using some salt to enhance flavors, but not the huge amount these people are using! How are they not all in the hospital? I cannot, and do not use a lot of salt in my food...would love to see a show on there for the low sodium cook.

I like the Food Network, but totally get what you're saying. That's why I like PBS on the weekends in the morning. Good cooking shows.
