Some vehicles have no provision for alignment adjustments in the rear.

Case in point: my 1984 Dodge B-150 work van. Fortunately, the wreck it was involved a few years before I bought it didn't mess up the factory alignment too badly.

Alignments are becoming the biggest scam since rust-proofing.

Seems like it. That's why I was shocked when I recently bought 4 tires for my 4Runner at Firestone...they said they'd have to check the alignment during the install and they would let me know. Surprisingly, they said the alignment was within specs I for sure expected them to try and tack on a couple hundred clams

Please explain. I think the 4 wheel alignment is a scam for the following reason. An alignment should be all 4 wheels or else your not aligning anything.

It seems to me that someone decided to call it something different so they could charge more.

I am not sure what the hell a 2 wheel alignment would do, unless your just adjusting the camber and caster, but your not aligning sheet.

Solid axel, leaf spring rear suspenions do not do have any alignment adjustment. So if you take in a vehicle with one of these, you get a two wheel alignment.

What about all of the Julio's running around texas in their work vans that are going down the road sideways? It looks as if the rear axle is out of alignment and it causing the vehicle to "crab" down the road.

I am not arguing, I am only asking. The only thing I know about alignments is when I am driving something and it is not right, I bring it somewhere.

So learn me something will ya?

Yea, if a car is going straight with no vibration and the tires are wearing fine, I wouldnt believe the mechanic asswipes.

If any one of the tires is not lined up in the direction the vehicle's center of gravity is traveling, it's essentially being dragged down the road. The more it's misaligned, the more it's being dragged, offering resistance to the vehicle's motion. This unnecessarily robs horsepower, gas mileage, and tire life for those misaligned tires. Regular tire rotation only spreads the wear to those other tires that are properly aligned.

All four wheels need to be aligned if possible. Even if the rear two tires are not adjustable, it still does not make sense to have the front two tires out of alignment if their condition can be corrected.

One more thing:

As far as all those Julios whose car is going down the road sideways (crabbing)....

Most likely, that vehicle was involved in a collision and the frame was not restored to within its design limits. If this is the case, even if one attempts to adjust the tire alignment, there is a limit to how much tire alignment can do. You simply cannot correct out all of the crabbing if one of the settings needs to be beyond the range of the adjustable limit.

As anyone who has ever been to a track can tell you, you always want to do hard braking while the vehicle is traveling in a straight line if at all possible; otherwise, if you're going around a curve for instance, you might go into a flat spin, or worse, roll the car... losing all control of the vehicle.

In certain emergency, hard-braking events, Julio's vehicle could lose control and cost someone their property, life and/or limbs... where if it had an acceptable frame and tire alignment, it might not.

The bottom line: Whether or not some shops are abusing the concept of tire alignment, it's still important for economy and safety reasons. The idea is to find a reputable shop to do business with.

Except for gross misalignments, you just can't tell without putting the vehicle on the alignment rack and hooking up those sensors.

When that's the case, a front end alignment will be impossible. The frame or the rear suspension needs to be repaired first and that's exactly what the shop should tell you if you ask for a front end or four wheel alignment. Even though it is just a front end alignment, the rear wheels are still used to orient the axis of the vehicle, not the frame.
