Everything is a known quantity-except how much profit the dealership expects from each sale. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with a OTD price.

It isn't. But the salesman doesn't know or set that price. The manager does. Any salesman that qoutes you a discounted out the door price without talking to the boss is pulling your chain.

Thankfully I ducked a bullet on the wife wanting a new car, but I figure when she gets that wild hair again I'll ping skia to get what a fair price to pay for the car is and go to the dealer with that. If he matches, cool. If not, the wife will have to get over it. I don't think it's right to try to get over on the car sales folks... but I also don't think it's right getting bent over either...

I've been having a bad week/ Month/ weekend.......My BMW had to be towed in the dealership here on Saturday and it almost had too today. Funny how a bad battery/ alternator will leave you on the side of I-40

I have no issue with salesmen or dealerships making a buck. It is a BUSINESS and that's what businesses do. What I DO take issue with is the "lipstick on a pig" dress up and sale of a POS as a great car. Tell me it's "questionable" and quote me a price based on that condition, then it's up to me to make a decision. telling me it's a great car when it's not is stealing.

Yeah yeah, my responsibility to check it out...blah blah blah. That is TRUE if you state nothing about the condition. If you tell me it's great, you need to stand by those words.

Make a buck, make a BIG buck, but make an HONEST buck.

That's where buying private party comes in handy, negotiating the sales tax.

So, how much for the car, and how much for the owner's manual (sold seperately)?

In Texas, you pay sales tax on the boat and the motor, even if used. Used fishing gear would be exempt, though, if sold private party, just like that $ 5,000 Chevy owner's manual.

So it might go something like this:

32' Chris Craft sales price $ 100.00

twin 250 Johnsons sales price $ 50.00 each

fishing rod & reel sales price $ 40,000

of course, you get a hook and a sinker with the rod and reel, thus the cost.

California DMV got wise to this decades ago. The DMV will charge you a "use tax" which is the same rate as sales tax, and they will decide the value of the car, not your bogus bill of sale.
