Default Saw the Stealth Today.

Was going to the store, just after I got home, and as I pulled out of our street I looked up and saw the Stealth taking off from Edwards, here in Palmdale. It is the most amazing sight to see this, part space craft, part giant mythical bird take flight.

The first time I saw it I was on the 14 FWY and it seemed like it appeared right in front of the freeway. I was so stunned I forgot that I was driving 65 mph in traffic, and it doesn't stay in sight too long.

I saw it at about 4:35 PM. Pacific Time, and it was probably at it's home base on Mo. at 4:50 pm. c

As many times as I get to see that awesome plane take flight, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it

Its hard to imagine the nighthawks being retired, such a futuristic bird, b2 is still awesome though.

Edwards is awesome. I've spent some time out there and have been out on the runways---while I haven't even seen a fraction of it, it is amazing what takes off and lands there.

A few are kept in storage at Tonopah. The rest...gone. There are some pics around of them in their climate controlled storage.

That would be very cool to see.

I saw one of those planes that look like a big flying wing one time near Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio and thought that it really looked out of place in the sky.. but cool to see.

Not sure what they are called.

I saw the Stealth bomber do a flyover at The Charlotte Motor Speedway prior to a Coka-Cola 600 and it was just amazing.
We didn't hear or see it until it almost broke the plane of the bowl, but when it passed it was one loud mofo.
Very

Jimmy Johnson won that night.

I worked out there too for awhile on the B1-B, my personal favorite. Saw them flying around many times. Ex-FIL was a Program Manager on the B-2.

Edwards is a cool place and waaaaaaayyyyyy out there. Seeing all the streets named for test pilots that were killed kinda creeped me out at first, but I got used to it eventually.

Working on the NASA side, we were right next door to the F22 test hangar. Many times heard that bad boy ramping up and down. LOVED to watch em take off!

One day after work, we were headed home, but I had to turn back to get something. We were on the highest 'hill' there at Edwards and saw a B2 in a damned-near crazy position. Right wing down. Left wing up. Damned-near vertical and I don't think they were more than 1000' feet off the ground. From our viewing angle it looked vertical, but I'm not sure if it was or not. Either way, it looked HUGE!

Had the pleasure of watching F-15's ,-16's, -18's (NASA), and the SR take off while standing at "Last Chance" out there by the runway. SO many cool things going on there. The anechoic chamber there was pretty cool to see, and amazing how it silences everything.

Yeah, it's in the middle of nowhere, but 45 minutes from Lancaster/Palmdale down the 14, or 45 minutes up to Tehachapi on the 58 (where we lived).

Miss the geography. Miss the things to do. Miss the excitement at Edwards. Don't miss the politics or high cost of living. Fortunately, we lived in Kern County, so we didn't have the LA influence as badly as Lancaster/Palmdale do.

I've really got to find some of my pics from my days working out there. Lots of Shuttle, SR, -15 ACTIVE, and -18 pics.

we had a B2 flying around here a few years ago, was undergoing some testing at WPAFB.

In the air, it was frightening.

I saw one take off from Dobbins AFRB (Marietta, GA.) with a F-16 chase several yrs. ago. The end of the runway there is pretty close to a major 4-lane road. Several bizs. with parking lots you can plane watch from. The thing that surprised was how much larger the stealth plane was to the F-16. It might have been the F-22 doing flight test from Lockheed. They make them now to be a bomber/fighter combo. Maybe that is why it was so much larger over the dedicated fighter role of the F-16?
