What's the difference between "lake effect" snow and regular snow?

I have two inches of snow.
just south of me has 2 feet.

Lake effect is more localized than synoptic snow.
otherwise, it's an effect of cold weather sweeping over he lake and picking up moisture to dump on the ground.

that's the lake effect storm line

When very cold air blows across warm water it causes lots of snow over long periods of times and is very localized. It all depends on the wind.

All it takes is a few degrees of wind change and you can get zero or 2 feet.

It's also very fine snow so there is a lot of blowing and drifting. The UP of Michigan has had upwards of 6 feet of snow already and they're getting hammered with more. My lake house is in SW Michigan (150 miles from my house) and they're getting around a foot of snow there.

And you love it.

We sometimes get Ocean effect snow in NH. Not as much snow but we had one storm that lasted a full week. Snowed constantly 3-5 inches a day for the whole week plus a day or so.

Talked to my brother yesterday in Holland. They are getting nailed. So much depends on the winds - some areas have about 16" and some right by our lake place on the shoreline only have about 7 inches.

Fortunately, we beat the snow by a few days. We Closed on the Ohio house last Friday and moved the last of our stuff to Orlando.

Some consolation - it is supposed to be bitterly cold here as well over the next few days, with highs only in the mid-50's. Just might have to wear socks with my sandals...

I've asked that same question a hundred times. Snow is snow. Doesn't matter how it got there. Is there lake effect rain? Lake effect heat? Do they call it mountain effect snow in Colorado? Someone will now chime in and explain how the winds pick up moisture and then drop it somewhere..

So what? Snow is snow - crystallized moisture. Who cares where the moisture comes from.

Here is a picture of "Lake Effect"
You can call it what you want but this was taken an hour ago. This is Buffalo where the Niagara river meets Lake Erie. The wind is coming down the fetch of the lake and picking up moisture and turning it into snow.
Buffalo is clear, however, South Buffalo is the demarcation line. West Seneca, the town where I grew up, already has four feet.. This isn't a blizzard, but a major lake effect snowfall event. This is the real deal for a lot of people..
There is a big azz lake behind that wall of cloud...
Monte's office is down the way and mine is to the left of the arena.

The National Guard is on the way.
This stuff isn't slated to stop until tomorrow night.
6' is predicted for some areas in the direct path of the lake effect.
It's thundering and lightning and fish are falling from the sky.
