if the following are true: you need a truck, you cant get a better deal, your bonus wont end up being significantly higher otherwise, then it seems like a win.

as someone who buys trucks with lots of options, know this....you don't get much for them when you sell, they are expensive to fix when they break, they start to break around 100k or better

One step closer. I expect I'll have the truck some time next week.

6.25% tax sucks, but the way the system is structured, you can't lowball anymore. They use a value calculator and you pay tax on the HIGHER of the two numbers.

That sucks.

Then again, in NH where there is no sales tax, you pay a registration fee that is based on the original MSRP. The registration on my '09 Z06 was based on a $76k MSRP (paid $66k) so the fee was rather steep. When I bought the '76 Vette, I had no idea what the original MSRP was so I guessed at $8k. The registration fee was stupid cheap.

NC ya pay 3% of net purchase price and what they deem fair market value for the annual plates where the now hit ya up with local fire/ school special taxes. For 2020 KR annual is $450 plates + emissions after $1,500 one time taxes, 69 M1 is $36 annual including emissions and 73 eldo is $24 annual w emissions.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I think that's incorrect. Texas calculates SPV, standard presumptive value, which is a number they pull out of their ass when you give them the VIN and the mileage. They have ZERO idea of condition, damage, mechanical issues, etc. They just spit out a number based on VIN and mileage.

Now, say their value is $ 100. The minimum tax you'll pay is on 80% of that, so let's say you buy the vehicle for $ 10, because it was wrecked. You'll still pay tax on $ 80 valuation.

If you pay MORE than $ 100, you'll pay tax on the actual sales price. If you pay less, you'll pay less tax, but never less than the tax on 80% of the SPV.

The only exceptions to this are, if you're buying from a Texas licensed dealer, you'll pay tax on the sales price, no SPV calculations necessary. OR, you can get a formal, written appraisal of the car from a licensed Texas appraiser or insurance adjuster, and claim that as proof of the actual value of the car. Of course, you'll spend money hiring someone to write that evaluation for you, so you still pay.

I think you said what I said.

SPV - $24,700.00
Sales price - $23,000.00

Tax will be 6.25% of $24,700.00

Correct?

I got to take it out for a drive. About 30 minutes. Everything works as it should. It's clean, tight, etc. the ONLY thing I noticed is that in gear, at a light, it seems to have a slight miss. Almost like a lope. Barely noticeable and only in gear. No other issues that I am aware of at all. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it. Before the final call, I'm going to see what might be the reason for the idle thing. I can't call it rough or really even a miss. Just a barely noticeable oscillation.

Is that due to it dropping into 4cyl mode?

Correct?
No. In this case, the tax will be paid on $ 23,000, the actual sales price. You pay the tax on the actual sales price, unless the sales prices is LESS than 80% of the SPV, in which case, you're paying an artificial minimum of tax on 80%. You're paying over 80% of the SPV, so you pay tax on the actual purchase price. The only way the SPV would kick in is if you paid less than $ 19,760, in which case Texas would want tax on that (80%) even if you paid less than $ 19,760.

More unscrupulous people looking to skirt this law might pay 80% or less of the SPV for a car, and then buy the owner's manual, spare tire, or a t-shirt, as a separate transaction, for a separate price, in an unrelated sale. That's wrong, illegal, and totally unacceptable, by the way.
