As Jeff explained the wind patterns coming off the lake pick up moisture and drop snow where ever they are blowing.

My friend Ken who owns the camp in Ontario Canada where we fish lives in Clayton NY, just north of Watertown and the opposite end of Lake Ontario from Jeff & Steve ( Monte). He told me you look at the weather radar before heading out and you usually have close to a four hour window of what may be happening.

He explained that it twists like a snake slithers and the difference between bright and sun and getting two or three feet of snow may be only 10 miles.

Jeff/ Steve stay safe

If I was at my MI place I'd jump on 94 and tool around for a bit. It's a mess up there. Nothing like Buffalo but approaching a couple of feet and definitely highway time.

For your enjoyment Mark. About the 1:30 mark...

The lack of hurricaines, tornados, earthquakes.

The only time snow sucks is when trees fall on the power lines or your snow blower breaks. There's a quiet and calmness that comes with a late night snowstorm. Not to mention snow is fking awesome.

City is still shut down. My work is canceled. Police found a guy deceased after being buried in his car under 12 to 15 feet of snow. Just started snowing outside my place. This is crazy.

Hope you are safe, Jeff.

Last major hurricane to hit FL was in 2005. How many snow storms has Buffalo had in the past 9 years?

And there's a quiet calm right before a hurricane. And after it's downright errie.

I do agree, night time snow storm is beautiful. These big weather events are both beautiful and ugly.

If I could get out of my driveway, my 525i with snow tires performs beautifully in the snowy conditions. It's a blast to drive in those conditions.

The entire great lake region is seeing lake effect.
Check out the radar.
What you're seeing is very heavy snowfall rates as the wind travels NE and drops the snow inland.
The darker the blue, the heavier the snow.

We did that at a Bills vs Houston game back in the '80's.
Out of the 12 beers that we snuck in, we only drank the first two.
The other 10 froze to slush and were undrinkable, even after keeping them under our armpits for half an hour.
We thought that the snow cooler was a good idea..... NOT!

I went to a Colts/Chiefs playoff game in the mid-90's when it was -6 degrees at game time. They weren't selling beer because the lines were all froze, only booze to be had was schnapps and hot chocolate. Fortunately we smuggled in a mixture of peach schnapps and vodka (aka rocket fuel) in a boda bag. They weren't even patting people down as the clothing was so thick you could have smuggled in essentially anything. Everybody had a flask or something. Damn cold game.

It is legal in your state to drive on the roads with a snowmobile?

Cops would look pretty silly trying to chase you in their cars

In past major storms the Police actually ASK them to get on the highways to help find stranded people.

That's exactly what is happening. The snowmobile clubs come out in force and help out, not only saving trapped motorists, but ferrying nurses and doctors to hospitals.
Driving on the roads is a blast, as you can really see what your sled has.

The Great Lakes are a blessing as we have unlimited clean water.
Once in a while they have their say though.
