I really hope that most companies will let their employees stay home. They just proved to themselves that it can be done. There is no reason to bring the majority of them onsite full time.

For my department, we were already slated for full telecommuting this year. May/June timeframe, in fact. It just got accelerated by a few months.

I noticed something at least a decade ago. I realized that at my old company, there was a HUGE area of floor space that was 100% dedicated to employees who all they did, all day, every day, was reconcile customer accounts. They sat at a computer, and had essentially no need to talk to their co-workers. Most of the time they had a question or problem, they called the customer first, and then account manager (90+% of the time the account manager sat somewhere else) if the call to the customer failed to resolve the discrepancy, they rarely needed to talk to their direct supervisor. The systems were set up so that if an account went 45 days without a completed and signed off reconciliation, a mid-level manager was alerted.

I thought to myself: why are we paying for office space, parking space, shared space, bathrooms, janitorial services, landscaping services etc. for these folks, when there is absolutely no reason they couldn't do those jobs from home?

the last 2 jobs of my spotted career involved working out of my home office, that was 2002 thru 2009. some travel to properties (ended up visiting 45 states in those jobs) for a day or two per week, then home writing or later editing reports. some days ran long, other days got done early. as long as phone calls got answered/returned, and likewise emails, everyone was happy.

You can't get a house for 400k in L.A, Orange or San Diego county, much less most of No Cal. A small 1 Bd condo if not anywhere near the ocean. People can afford it because they make the money.

Not to hijack this thread but...

I don’t know the regions, but I know LA in relation to Bakersfield. Is it going to be subsumed any time in the near future?

Some day I need to be let in on this porter ranch business. Only porter I know from LA is in Lower Alabama.

I don’t know the market specifically, but cali real estate is ridiculously off the hook. Why? Is it really that great there? I don’t get it. No political responses from the peanut gallery please.

I collaborate a LOT, worldwide, and have been able to do the same shit I do from an office that I can do at home without any drop in performance. Why in the hell do I need a 3-hr daily commute when I have proven I can deliver from an office or at my kitchen table? Shit gets done day in and day out regardless of my location. Hope one result of all this is changes like this.

The weather's perfect. You can pick what kind of weather you want by driving 10-15 miles. The mountains and hills and deserts and the beaches are beautiful. Because of the diversity over the last 150 plus years they have the most beautiful women. They have 19 professional sport franchises. You can be in the snow in the afternoon after you were laying on the beach same day No humidity like the East midwest and south, or all the bugs. The reason it's expensive is because you pay for what you get. In the last 70 years we've had six Republican Governor's and four Democratic Governor's. So California hasn't always been a Liberal state. It still doesn't affect people enjoying the state on who the Governor is. I've lived in the Midwest and South they have great people but too flat, hot and muggy and buggy.
Like i told steeb who always trashes California. For 300k you can get a nice home in Florida which is barely a down payment here. If Florida was so great and California was so bad wouldn't it be the other way around?
The best place to live in is where you're at and enjoy.
