Were they just messing with the duck? Were they just after fish near the duck?

Curious minds want to know. Need more info on what happen or more picks to tell the story.

Excellent shots though!

The Eagles were flapping up and down near the edge of the ice shelf and the Common Merganser (Duck) was just swimming by. There were probably 50 ducks and 30 Eagles in the area. Everyone seemed to be getting along just fine.

The picture is a little deceiving. An 800mm lens compresses the shit out of whatever it's seeing due to the distance from the subject. Think of it as flattening the image.

Still, the ducks were plenty close to those Juvies.

Maybe they were trying to get his fish?!

I found this pic posted on Pinterest. I kind of see what you meant by being flat. These two look round and shapely. But yours has so much more action and intrigue as to what they are up too!

Those are great shots but I know what you mean needing some kind of action.

This guy was busy walking this branch last weekend. Bald Eagles are not recreational fliers. I've watched several of them stand on the same branch for 1.5 hours and not move. It makes for some pretty boring times until they spread those wing and fly. Then it's pretty exciting.

This year I saw 2 Bald Eagle tear up a squirrel to feed their eaglets on one of the Eagle Cams. Very stringy. At one point it look like the Bald Eagle parent was chocking on it! Crazy

Looks like it payed off for you to be a patient photographer! Dress warm. Were you all bundled up? And do you have to stay somewhat concealed so the eagles don't spot you and scare off?

Bald Eagles are opportunistic bastards. They'll steal food from anything. Around here many of them get injured or killed in collisions with cars chowing down on road kill.

Yes. Standing outside when it's 0 degrees can get a bit nippy. You have to dress for it.

I'm standing out in the open for all these pictures. I guarantee they can see me. They can see a rabbit from three miles away.

Do you have any pics from behind? We saw a very large bird of prey in the area of bald eagles that had at least 4', maybe 6' wingspan and tail feathers that were white towards the body but black towards the end.

If I had to guess I'd say you were looking at a sub-adult Bald Eagle. Most likely approximately four years old. In another year he'd have the full white head and tail feathers.

This guy flew so close to me I ducked. When I pulled my 560mm lens away from my ugly mug I realized he was a bit further away.

Here's another look at those Talons (not claws...lol...my bad)!

Looking at picture taken out in the wilds can be deceptive. This pic give you a better idea of just how huge these birds really are!!

Do you have the zoom ability with your set up to capture a pic similar to this?

Yup.

And that's definitely a crop of a larger photo you can tell by the aspect ratio.
