A year ago this week I had a chance to experience a total solar eclipse. Epic experience. Watching a Sci Channel (I know.... much trash on it but this isn't bad) documentary right now about how scientists studied the corona during the eclipse. Though the surface of the sun is ~6000 degrees, the corona is 1,000,000 degrees and is present all the time but can only be seen during a total eclipse. Scientists are trying to figure out why - or maybe they have.. watching the program. :-)

We were almost rained and clouded out but managed to get a few shots. Just an amazing experience. My photos were soft on focus; negligence on my part - had the right equipment but we thought we were rained out so didn't set up until clouds broke after the eclipse had actually started. I set up but in the excitement didn't get focus perfect.

Hey, the one due in 2024 goes right over my house... hope to see it.

This view is called the "diamond ring". It occurs just before and just after totality. Just to the right of the "diamond ring" are two or three small bright spots know as Baily's Beads and the red fringe (sorry, slightly out of focus) is know as the prominence. the prominence is more visible just after the diamond ring disappears and just for it reappears at the end of totality.

Default Something completely different

I'd rented a big 150-600mm telephoto lens to shoot the eclipse in the post above and when we got home I had a extra day on my rental so I hit a nearby nature center. Mostly shot birds but caught this dragon fly also. Couldn't get a head on shot of the little bugger though. Notice the wings are in sharp focus but the tail is blurred. Very shallow depth of field for sharp focus at the aperture I used.

The second shot was taken the same morning. Far from Thomas quality but worth a post.

So I posted a rough first edit of this shot here. Details on the image are in that thread.

Spent far to much time getting rid of some background noise but I think the result is considerably better than the previous, at least on a big monitor.

Sorry... ended up with a slightly cropped version here too and can't delete for some reason.

FWIW...

Like the Kinks song - 'Low Budget'. LOL

Canon 20d, Canon 55mm-250mm.

It would come to my front yard for a few weeks. I had to hide from it to get the shot. I went out the back door and was able to get fairly close from the side of the house. I knew once it spotted me it would fly away. I got in a few clicks before it got spooked.

Thanks! The 55-250 is actually pretty decent I think. 20d is older but a solid performer. Plenty of pixels.

I'm planning to rent a 150-600 for an airshow in October and hope to get over the nature center with my "guide" before I return the lens.

I've been going to airshows for 30 yrs. They are tough to shoot. Bright sunlight, fast moving subjects, etc...a little more predictable than birds in flight...but still tough. You will also need something wide for the static displays. Looking forward to the pics!

I've been to a couple but never with a lens with real reach. Was lucky on my first trip and got into a super spot to shoot. But only had a 135mm at the time. Have a wide angle it was super. I'll give the thread a reprieve from my stuff for a while but will post a couple tomorrow.

This show is really big... Blue Angles and all. Plan to pay for a priority pass to get me in the photography 'pit'.

What's cool is we are near the airport where they hold the show and I get to watch them fly over for practice for a couple days.

Oh, and you forgot the most important piece of equipment. Sunscreen!

Love the backlighting especially the way the beak is just luminous.

Big airshow near me in a few weeks. Thought I'd toss in a few from the first show I attended several years ago. Hope to rent a super telephoto and get spot in the photographer pit.

Probably the 150-600 Tamron or Sigma. Somewhat tempted by the 400 f4.0 Canon but it's twice the price and I think the flexibility of the zoom might trump the performance of the Canon. Suppose I could double up and put my 70-200 2.8 on my 7d for if I needed something shorter.

Only shot an airshow a couple times and neither time with the right gear.

You have any thoughts?
