Cool Old school machining with a planer

My friend Bill is machining a base for a large oil field engine at the machine shop at Rough and Tumble.

The cutting tool is basically a high speed steel square tool like what would be used on an engine lathe. The two leather belts on the side control the movement of the table. The center pulley spins freely while one side moves the table front and the other back. Notice the one leather belt has a twist in it so it runs the pulley backwards.

When it moves back to take another cut, it moves over a small distance for the set width of the cut.

A planer isn't fast but does a good job.

Impressive rig but would be slow for sure. I was impressed by how strong that cut blade must be to maintain the sharpness for so many passes.

What depth was it set to cut from each pass?

Very cool. Looking at the base and wondering what that beast would weigh?

They were still using them at GE when I started there back in 1978. A bit more modern version, but basically the same machine.

I was lucky enough to have never run one. After hearing some stories over the years, glad of it! Lots of power transferred between the tool and workpiece, sometimes one fails to hang in there!

In my day and area the posted tool was called a, "shaper".

"Shaper, metal-cutting machine in which the workpiece is usually held in a vise or similar device that is clamped to a table and can be manually operated or power driven at right angles to the path of a chisel like cutting tool with only one cutting edge held on the end of a reciprocating ram. ."

Looked to be 3/16 to a 1/4" of depth. Step over was probably about a 1/16". Main thing with cutting cast iron is getting under the skin or crust as that cuts much easier.

A shaper has the tool move while the part is stationary and a planer has a stationary tool while the work moves.

Basically the same process but slightly different.

1:50 is a planer and 3:16 is a shaper.

Actually the machine shop line shaft at R&T is powered by an electric motor.

Bill's "every day business" is powered by a 6 hp hit and miss engine.

Cast iron. Cat Tail Foundry is very close to Rough and Tumble, it's possible they cast it.
