We had 30,000 reenactors at the 135th. We had enough - 15k to do a full scale Pickett's Charge. Our battle line was one mile wide. I think around 200 people were allowed to make it to the 'Copse of trees' at the angle. The rest - dead on the field, walking wounded, etc...I took a hit and looked around the field. It was unreal...a few minutes that allowed us to imagine what a real battlefield and Pickett's Charge looked like during the real battle. Usually when I take a hit. I do think about what it must have really been like to have been wounded and left on the field. A gut shot was pretty much 100% death.

Mark is a professional photographer, it's not like he had something set wrong. He was dead serious when he told me about this.

Another pro photographer posted some photos and desc. the other day. They were waiting for the sun to come up early one morning and shooting across a portion of the battlefield from a federal viewpoint. A dense fog rolled in from the right (Confed. left) out of nowhere. It just completely rolled back out the same direction it originated from an hour earlier. VERY similar to the Confederate troop movements from the start to end of battle. It didn't dissipate or lift at all...just rolled in and back out.

If you go, be sure and record some ghost stories. I hear strange sightings almost always accompany those re-enactment events.

Something I've always wondered about at these re-enactments - how does one know that they've been hit? Is it decided beforehand who gets killed/injured and where at on the battlefield?

Every ten steps, they have to roll a 20-sided die to see if they can advance or fall down.

You are free to take a hit anytime that you want too. I always do Too hot, tired, etc...the new guys always want to burn powder and go all the way. Sometimes they will start asking people to take hits. One time they went down the line and gave each person a number 1-4. 1-survive, 2-dead,3-walking wounded, 4-advance to the enemy line. More soldiers were actually wounded vs. killed during the real battles. So, realistically, you should see more soldiers just walking or struggling off the field to the rear.

There have been talks about getting that ratio correct for the 150th G'burg. During the 135th Pickett's Charge. We had enough (12k) to do a full-scale charge. Everyone followed the scenario - about 100 made it to 'the angle'. The majority of us were walking wounded and scattered all over the mile long field. It was a sight that I will never forget.

I'm getting excited ! We even have reenactors coming from the U.K., Poland, and Germany. There is a bit of a following from other countries about the war.

Me and my wife are going up there next weekend. I've never been to Gettysburg before so this should be fun!

I do wish Pickett's charge would be conducted on the original battlefield though.

They don't allow us to point guns at each other on National Park land. We can do living histories, but no battles. The park is going to have a walk across the real Pickett's Charge on July 3rd. The public is welcome to participate. Check their website. Lots of special things going on the entire week.

I've been a few times over the years. Fox and Friends is supposed to do a live segment one morning...I don't know which day. There will also be other national media. CSPAN-3/American History TV will be televising live on Sunday. I think from the real battlefield.

I can't recommend it enough - rent or acquire the movie "Gettysburg" before your trip. It was filmed on the actual farm we will be on this year, plus the 135th site. It is historically accurate. The characters, how the battle evolved, etc...you will have a much better understanding of the entire thing if you watch the movie.

We are scheduled for a 2-6pm battle on Sat. which means - probably marching out of camp around 12-1pm and the battle being over nearer 7pm.

I will p/m my cell number. If you get there early or stay late. Maybe we can all meet up for a bit.

I'll pm my cell phone number to both you and Vatorman. I think it would be cool to visit your campsite if that's allowed or if you aren't too busy. Just meeting up somewhere is fine too. Thanks for the info.

It is allowed, before the battle starts. There is a shuttle running from the spectator area to the camps. You are free to tour the camps, sutlers, etc...once you get to the CS camp. Send me a text or call. I may or may not have access to my phone. I will try to keep a check on it.

Ask directions to:

First Corps
Longstreet's Corps
5th Battalion
28th GA. Inf.

150th Gettysburg Reenactment - A Blue Gray Alliance Event - 150th Gettysburg Reenactment A Blue Gray Alliance Reenactment
