I can neither confirm nor deny it, but Im told that Ariens riders, and Dixon riders, are all produced by Husqvarna AB/Electrolux.

Z mowers I think are Ariens produced/rebadged Gravely.

Check out my score today

84 214, electric pto, no rot, good deck plus all sorts of parts and whatnot. Runs great shifts perfect that vari drive thing is neat.

Mid 70's 212 Unknown condition of motor has all of the panels for it they are just not on it.

Guess I don't need a box store mower now just have to refurb the 214.

Forgot the best part, free.

Didn't know about the military 10%.

They are doing 10% off or 0% for 18 months w/ free delivery too though. Not sure if its really free delivery or if they are taking care of me because i am only two miles away from the store though.

That 214 is nice, take car of the K321 Kohler and it will take care of you. Keep the Vari-drive linkages adjusted and lubed, and dont "feather' the clutch, the belt is a bitch to change.

Customer yesterday mentioned wanting to sell his 1986 Deere 316, he said the onan started spewing oil and it was a bad oil switch, they put on a new switch and it was fine...then the oil light came on and he shut it down and hasnt touched it for a year...has 3 point, box blade, spike harrow, disc harrow, plow, and 46" deck...he will either want it fixed, or to sell it as is...ether way...WINNING

Also, another little thing...MTD makes their own engines now..in China. They put a 420cc engine in these newer riders and I..personally refuse to service them, none of my distributors support filters for them so all parts must be ordered directly from MTD or Sears..at full retail.

Overall, reviews are good on the engines, but they are unlike anything brigg,s kohler ,or kawasaki have ever offered..they even have what is essentially an AIR injection valve for emissions compliance. But as far as working on them, it looks alot like a Honda GXV390..but CHEAP as all hell...and finding a service center willing to put tools to them is getting hard...many turn them away simply as a stand against MTD taking production to China, vs using USA made Kohlers or Briggs engines.
Red, my Generac GP5939 portable generator and my Husqvarna 150BT leaf blower both have Chinese made engines in them. You wouldn't refuse to service those would ya?

Service...

The Generac should have a GX-390 clone, air filter foam, plug, is the same as the Honda it was copied from...I can service those, and do often, but I wont work on the gen head itself....

The Husky, wouldn't touch it, sorry...that model had terrible service history across the board, the models with the Japanese Kawasaki commercial engine were more reliable.

I was talking to a new neighbor over the weekend about lawn care and discovered he has been in the small engine repair business for about 12 years now. This is what he told me:
  • Murray is made by Murray.
  • John Deere is made by John Deere.
  • There are several hundred names that can be found on the side of an MTD product, but MTD does not make any AYP, Noma, Dynamark, or Sears product.
  • Sears in the late 80's was made by AYP and Murray depending on model. Now they are only made by AYP.
  • The new line called Scotts is partially made by AYP.
  • And, as for John Deere: The cheaper smaller tractors are AYP and the bigger tractors are made by John Deere.
  • Huskvarna mowers are also made by AYP except a few high-end commercial models.
  • Also the bottom-end or should I say cheap trimmers and chain saws from Huskvarna are made by Poulan.
  • Have you ever heard of Gibson and shit? They built a lot of the Sears products in the 70's and 80's and also built Lawnboy's tractor line and some of the Ford line in the late 80's.

you neighbor's info is a little dated...and some is flat out false, and contradictory.

John deere is Made by John Deere..this applies to all riders, their push mowers are made by someone else, and it varies from year to year.

AYP/Electrolux used to make all Craftsman mowers, except the Rear engine rider, it was always murray. AYP was purchased by Husqvarna AB, they merged and AYP mowers and all those they made, we essentially rebadged Husqvarna mowers. Husqvarna, up to 2010, made Poulan, Poulan pro, Craftsman, Dixon, and some Ariens machines. Then sears went to MTD.

MTD makes Toro riders, yard machines riders, yard man, troy bilt, White outdoor, mtd pro, Huskee, Rally, and a few others including cub cadet.

Husqvarna purchased Poulan when they purchased electrolux...any poulan saw not ending in XP is a Poulan based model/homeowner, the XP machines are made in Sweden. Their trimmers are hit and miss, some are made in china, some have Kawasaki engines, some are made in sweden, really no way to ID them specifically.

Some Craftsman mowers are rebadged Simplicity tractors only the largest and most expensive models.

Noma and Dynamark have been defunct for many years now, but were murray owned names when they were in use...MTD currently makes most of the Sears/Craftman LT rider lineup.

Murray is made by Briggs and Stratton/Snapper

AYP/Husqvarna does not make, nor have they ever made a Deere product.

Scotts was a stand alone company, who's mowers were made by Noma/murray, then john deere...Deere purchased scotts, then dropped scotts and dropped their Sabre line, and renamed all of them the L/LA/D series we see today.

Gibson did make alot of the Ford mowers, but Sears was primarily built by Roper, David Bradley, MTD, then AYP...then Husvarna, now MTD again.

I got to make one correction I just noticed...Gilson, not Gibson is who I was referring to.

Gilson also made ALOT of the montgomery wards and western auto units in the 80's.
