A friend of mine has been into them since the '60s. He seems to just collect vs. build a layout and running them. He has some of those pricey German built pieces. |

I used to be a Train Collectors Assn. member years ago, TCA had an annual convention at the York Pa. fairgrounds.....it was KRAZY, this was before Lionel went to China, and was still made here.....
I had a decent layout in one bay of my 3 car garage up north, built it with the kids, it was fun.....my son has my old GG1 locomotive and a couple pieces of track.....sold the rest of it preparing to move south..... |

Disney made a movie about it, too. The REAL chase went through several local towns to me. I wish they would play more old movies. I get TCM, but it's still hit and miss with some of their offerings.

Never had a toy train set but have spent plenty of time around the real things. I have spent the last 29 years working in the rail industry...not as a R R employee but as a supplier of engineered products used on freight cars and locos
Want to know the definition of "gut check". It is laying on your back between the rails underneath a freight car checking the hydraulic shock absorbers when the cars on the track next to you ( 5 feet away) start moving. Even though I knew the track was blue flagged and the yard master was standing there (by the side, not underneath like me) saying "Y'all good son"...it is not an experience I would recommend. Saw some crazy sheet in rail yards over the years |

I used to run a O SCALE Congressional, just like that one in the famous Union station wreck in '53 Wash DC.....only loco in the world that could go from full speed ahead doing 90+ mph, and toss into reverse, burning all 4-6-6-4 backwards, skip all the derailers like they not there, and lose all the passenger cars before taking the station apart.....it plowed through the end of the famous bent up rails at the track's end, the heavy steel barricade and concrete, and made it to the main concourse marble floor, where it fell through to the mail sorting room underneath......it radioed ahead to warn that the brakes were failed, as in NONE, from Ivy City about 3? miles north of the station....
I don't THINK anyone was killed, but that Loco driver had a hell of a drive that day........ |

I have HO and O scale trains, which after looking at them again recently, I will probably sell. Much of the HO stuff is from the mid 70s, through 1980. The O gauge trains are from the mid-late 40s. Maybe a few pieces from the very early 50s.
My Grandfather loved the railroad and due to space, had N gauge for his setup. My Dad wasn't so much into trains, but there was a locomotive which passed by where he lived. For my birthday one year, he talked the engineer into letting me take over the controls, which was pretty memorable!! I also met a girl who said she pulled a train, but she really didn't strike me as being all that strong. |
