The "casting a shadow on this earth" is probably from being influenced by Bad Bob's line to Roy Bean "I'll rid the ground of your shadow". Pure poetry.

Possibly but possibly not. No I would not do that, but in semi auto pistols holding the trigger back all the way allows the disconector to grab and then to fire the gun you must release and then pull the trigger. That trick was first noted when the custom smiths were setting up competition .45 1911s back in the 50s and 60s.

Those guns were set up so carefully to get a very light trigger pull and many times when letting the slide go home would slam fire. Holding the trigger back and letting the disconnector work stop slam firing.
