Driveway asphalt replacement

I had an asphalt contractor come out to my house this week.
My 3800+ sq ft circular driveway needs a total replacement.
First, he told me he doesn’t dig up the complete old black top and just reuses what he can with pouring new stuff over the old rotten mess.

I think that’s not the right way to do it correctly and he went on about how he was running a 30% discount for a promotion.

When I told him to email the estimate, he tried to pressure me into what he called a “deal too good to pass up” if I agreed to it today.

Who the hell does business that way?

My rule of thought usually is, if you want an answer right now, it's no.

Alot of them do... Tree trimmers and roofers also as "we're in your area and discount is today only"...

When they start that I'm out.

I didn't even get an estimate for that sewer job I just had done. The drains are now working great. Talked him into coming back tomorrow to insulate the water pipes (unheated basement), fix my furnace (boiler pump seems inoperable), and insulate my foundation with spray foam (daylight pouring through). Not worried about the cost, these things aren't exactly optional if I want to survive the Winter. Besides, I'll probably toss in a decent tip anyway.

A pleasant guy to work with and he's going above and beyond the call of duty to help me out. Showed up the day after inspecting the job and completed the work in one day (needed the time to verify digging with the city). Whole new drain system. What's not to like.

I hope you don’t live in the northeast because no driveways are done in the winter. All the big asphalt plants are shut and only the small ones that sell shit to gypsies are open.

I had my place redone a few years back and the plans called for the driveway to be replaced. The GC used some asshat contractor in November and sure enough by March the asphalt was coming up. I spoke with the GC and architect and told them to get the driveway redone or forego the $30k retention. The driveway guy offered $2k or he would redo the job. I told him to take a shit in his hat. I had the GC contract with a well known commercial asphalt company (Earle) in Jersey. They tore everything out and put down a solid base which was compacted with equipment. Came out a few weeks later in May and laid down the asphalt. I think it cost $15k+ at the time. Stay away from the Gypsies or them wandering stinking Irish, unless you need a pad for a trailer home.
