How can I fix this?
The toaster belonged to my grandma, I can vividly picture it in her kitchen when I would spend the weekends with her as a little kid every so often. Not exactly sentimental, but maybe it's a combo of I just like antiques, and this was in the family.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a toaster oven my friend's family gave me for Christmas one year....I used it all the time for about 20 years until it started burning the crap out of everything. It was a cheapo, probably Walmart special, and I went ahead and unboxed a nice toaster oven the same family had given me several years before.

"Why aren't you using the new one we gave you?"

"Well, the old one's working find so far."

When the old one crapped out, I unboxed the new one and use it now.

It's not about the toaster.

I hadn't seen you mention that about your GM before, but maybe I didn't read every post. But I'm just jerking your chain anyway.

I had three used microwaves given to me by family or friends, spanning about the last 40 years. The last one crapped out about 5 years ago so I finally had to buy one and I hate it; they've made them worse.

No idea how/why a toaster goes bad. About ten years after I kicked the old lady out I dusted off the toaster and tried to use it. Was as dead as her honor.

I don't do toast often enough to justify going out of my way to get a new toaster but it's nice to have with bacon and eggs so I just fry bread in the skillet using butter prior to making the eggs, and then do up the bacon. Works good and as an added bonus there's no dust collector taking up space on the counter.

I don't think I've owned a toaster at all in my adult life. Pretty sure we had a toaster growing up but I never really felt the need to make toast at home after that.

Worth mentioning, I don't keep bread at home either, so that might be a good reason to not have a toaster.

Spackle, duct tape, super glue, and if they fail go with bondo.

That 79c you paid 10 years ago is like $180.00 today, so it is worth fixing!!

They make a decent epoxy for plastics that is only about $14.00 a tube. Get about $6.00 worth of sandpaper and prep the area. Epoxy, sand, and then cover with a $7.00 can of clear Krylon.

For right about $27.00 your 79¢ soap dish can be good as new.

My first microwave was made in 1980. Lasted until 2017. The new 'upgraded' $$$ built in lasted about 3 years. The cheapy Wal Mart one is working fine in it's slot. ALL appliances are made crappier than they were in the past. Electronics seem to be a mixed bag. My 13 year old Zenith 50" flat screen has been flawless. Thousands of hours of use watching old movies and youtube videos, and of watching no spectator sports or NASCAR.

I didn't mean to imply that it didn't work as well, or last as long, as the old ones -- it does, so far anyway. It's a Frigidaire, not that brands matter anymore.

It's the freaking controls and the hoops I have to jump through. I hate freaking beepers whether they're on trucks or microwaves. The "Finished" beeps on this are VERY long, VERY loud, with a LONG silence between them, and there are four. I'm not deaf, I can hear when the cycle is done and don't need a freaking backup beeper off of a 10-wheeler to remind me.

Luckily, it does have a silent mode. But the directions to set it up are convoluted beyond belief. And every time the power flickers (I have a WH auto gen, but when the power goes out I get a 1-2 second loss, and that's enough) it wipes my settings out, I have to get the manual out and go through the whole rigamarole again.

Another stupid thing: The only time the light will come on is when it's running, and it shuts off and stays off once the cycle is done. The older ones, as I recall, the light would also come on any time you opened the door -- like when the cycle is finished and you wanted to check your food or whatever.

If the chip is small, I would suggest breaking off a larger section, as the bigger pieces will be easier to handle.
