Cool The Olds runs

I plumbed up the cooling system on the Olds with help from Roger, Tom and Gene. After we discovered a few leaks, I decided to run it.

We ran it for about a hour and I'm ecstatic to say it ran quite well.

Still have to take care of the leaks but it was sweet music to my ears.

Jeff

Although I was disappointed with the leaks, the smooth running and powerful exhaust note made me smile all day.

The engine is at least 112 years old and still has almost all it's original parts. I put in new wiring ( actually correct vintage wiring ),a new spark plug and a fuel line into the tank were all that had to be replaced.

It was a VERY good day.

Thanks. It hardly has any wear to it except where the one cam arm rotates back and forth. ( Roger thinks they didn't oil that pivot point ). It has next to nothing for wear on the babbitt bearings or the cylinder wall.

It was never worked hard on the farm

Where are the leaks and how do they affect its operation?

NEAT machinery....looks like it would be very much as home in an old flour mill like a friend owns on a creek he also owns up on the Md.W. Va. line his creek flows into the Potomac river.....Mill built back when Christ was new.....

The construction of it looks just like the gear that remains in the mill...same sort of vintage and maybe that engine is newer, but same construction details.....

I THINK the design is called 'Hit and Miss' which is why the large heavy wheels on it.....

I had to tighten a couple pipe joints and I need to repack the mixer ( carb ) gland nut as it drips gas.

I will made either lead sheet or copper washers for the head nuts as they drip water and I had two small drips on the bottom of the tank.

I will run a screw with a rubber washer in each pinhole. ( visible in the rust discoloration in the 6:00 position on the tank )

My sis used to live in Pa. just off I 81 south of Carlisle and a few times I took the kids to some farm equipment shows that had all sorts of vintage machines like that running and on display....interesting shows for sure, in that they laid out all the progress of the industrial 'revolution'......

When Roger reached inside the flywheel, he adjusted the governor. You are extremely deliberate in your movements. Gene was the guy with the red rag, he wasn't that close.

Thomas could use that as percussion accompaniment on his Name That Tune vids.

Roger commented on how nice it ran too. His Dad bought it the 70s not running so it was music to my ears to hear it runs so nice.

I just have to work on my technique on getting it started easily
