Came home to a surprise:
I guess I'll get a ladder and lift this thing off.

A friend tried to handle one of these cases. A four inch diameter limb fell on his house. He failed, and dropped the limb on to his wife's eye. She lost her eye. Call a pro if not 100% sure you can handle it.

BE AMAZED at the STOOOOOPIDITY of one YEUGGE boatload of large threatening trees in my burb here, silly 1/4 acre lots, houses up to 1800' and having a typical 4-5 trees with trunks 2+ feet in diameter......and SO MANY dead, dead limbs, leaning over like a disASSter waiting to happen.....

I'd be careful it doesn't rock off the roof... If was me it'd tie onto it and drag it off roof. Probably safest. Damage already been done.

Wait! Don’t touch it!
As bad as it may seem you’re extremely lucky the limb is still on the roof! Now the insurance company will pay for the house and the removal of the entire tree! Once you remove the limb from the roof they will try to avoid paying for the tree. Get the insurance company on it and or out there before you touch a thing. Ask me how I know |

Lift it off? OK...
If you really want to do this yourself, check with insurance to see if you're covered for that. The way to get it off is to wait until the roof is dry, cut the two branches that will hang up on the chimney and drag it off from the ground. Be VERY careful as you cut branches as CG can shift and cause the whole thing to pivot on the roof line and fall. |

Thanks for all the excellent advice! No, there is no way I am going to try to remove that limb myself. I'd bet a C note that within 5 minutes of me screwing with it, it would rock toward the ground and take out the sliding glass door below it!
Full story: Wife, pooch, and I went to the South Jersey shore last Saturday, 9/17 for a week of vacay. Shortly before 5 pm on Monday, my phone blew up, and my phone NEVER blows up! A major thunderstorm did a fair amount of damage in the neighborhood, including what you see in the pictures. It was a surprise on Monday, that I came back to today. I didn't bother to leave earlier, because I have already contacted the insurance company, my tree guy, and my main contractor. The tree guy was tied up, so I am hoping he can come by tomorrow, I have the insurance adjuster coming on Sunday morning, and the contractor says he can make at least some time for me next week, or as soon as the limb is removed. The worst part so far is that when we got home, we had no TV. The reason for the lack of broadcast signal was obvious, that dark grey rectangular looking thing hanging down in front of my shed is my digital OTA antenna. I have disconnected it, and its mounting pole so it is no longer dangling from the coax cable further beating up the paint on the outside wall. It is broken in two places, but I stuck it up on the entertainment center, connected it to the TV, and my wife is now watching "Judge Judy". We get NY channels, but can't get Philly. The TV is not recognizing the fire stick which is how we get streaming. We're still working on that one. |

Central Florida is facing another hurricane again, could be a CAT 3 and some of those con man are romaing subdivisions claimint to "hurricane proof" big tress (oaks, bays, etc).... One neighbor got quoted a price of $1,500 for thre 20' trees.... I had these @holes that prey on people in times like these....
As to the pictures above, if I were 20 years younger I'd be up there with a chains saw, nowadays, not so much. |

You forgot taking you down with. I learned the hard way back in July when I was coming down off our top roof, missed a step and went 10 ft down onto the 2nd roof.

Definitely a concern. I never had great balance to begin with, and over the last few decades, it has gotten worse. I only go on the roof if I really need to, and a couple of neighbors have said they will go up there for me if the need arises.

As with all roofs, it starts out not wavy, then gets wavy. Then, I get it replaced, and it isn't wavy any more, but a few decades later, it's wavy again. Before the limb fell, I didn't see any waviness, but sine it has probably been 15 years since I had it replaced, there could have been some minimal waviness.
Mrs. Mick is watching "Great British Baking", so I guess she figured out the fire stick thing. |
