Default Some people suck…

Wife, kid, and I went to a local college expo. Wife parked her grocery getter and I noticed the next car was close with wheel locked in our direction. No more spaces, but for shits and giggles I snapped a quick photo.

Came out 30 minutes later and saw the jerk backing out, bang in to the car and drove away. Of course they scraped the side of her car. Probably $20 polish will have it good for a lease. Screw that I called the cops out of principle and they took a report. Cop said the photos etc told the story along with me seeing it. Big ole tickets heading their way.

On top of them paying to repair your vehicle, they should be charged with leaving the scene of an accident

I agree. You acted just like Yadkin would have. You anticipated an issue from an inferior human (parking job was confirmation enough....Biden or Obama or CoExist stickers would have confirmed as well)----Documented it, and were rewarded by finding that the expected poor behavior had indeed transpired. The police report is the cherry on top. I'll go as far to say that if Yadkin reads this, he actually may be jealous. This is that good.

Wife looked at her car and said meh, that should wipe off. I told her that’s not the point, if the douche waited or left a legitimate note I would have been cool. I would use meguiars and a rag and all would have been fine. But because the driver was a dick I’m being a ball buster. Cop was totally cool even though it’s a lowly lease. He said he would have done the same as me. Leaving the scene of an accident regardless of dollar damage is a problem in Jersey (not as much as if you steamrolled someone though). Karma.

My girlfriend parked in a parking garage in PA. Same result. Somebody hit it and ran. Her car had $2,000 damage.

In PA, they separate out hit and run by "occupied" versus non-occupied. All other factors don't matter.

For a vehicle not occupied at the time of accident and subsequent hit and run, it is a simple citation classified as "summary offense". It's not even a misdemeanor. The fine in PA is about ~$250, if I recall. That's it. If you do $15k damage and the vehicle isn't occupied, it's still a $250 fine.

Police never found who hit her car. We had to pay $1,000 deductible to fix it.

There's a reason hit/runs of non occupied vehicles happen CONSTANTLY in PA. Because the consequences are completely inconsequential.

At todays Brandonflated prices, that's a several thousand dollar repair, not including the diminished value claim. I know we all joke about the magic restorative powers of Zaino, but, that ain't gonna buff out.

Follow up with the police, make sure you get the perp's insurance info to file your claim, and to follow up with the local D.A. to make sure the case is actually prosecuted. The other driver will no doubt claim they didn't know they had hit you. That might actually be possible if it was just the tire rubbing gently on your car. Not probable, but slightly within the realm of possibility.

I called the DAs office in PA (I'm 10 miles from NJ). And spoke with a Sgt from my local police department. It is literally a $250 summary offense in PA

I highly highly doubt it is much different in NJ. Almost certainly a summary offense and nothing more. A ticket. Possibly some points.

If OP is going that route
Track down the perp and get a picture of the damage on his car. Probably some paint transfer there too.

I just looked up the New Jersey statute for leaving an accident scene with no injuries.

It's a fine of $200-$400 (court discretion) and 2 points on the driving record of the at-fault driver. That's it. A $200-$400 fine and 2 points. End of story. It's not a felony, it's not a misdemeanor. It's a summary offense. A traffic violation. About as serious as getting pulled over for 55 in a 40 zone.

N.J.S.A. 39:4-129 is your NJ statute.

Here’s how it rolls in Florida:

Penalties for hit-and-run accidents

If a hit-and-run driver is eventually tracked down, they can be criminally charged with the following:

For damage to personal property only, the offending driver can be charged with a misdemeanor in the second degree, which carries penalties of up to 60 days of jail time and a maximum $500 fine.

If the victim suffers personal injury, the offending driver can be charged with a second- or third-degree felony, which carries up to 5 years in prison and a maximum $5,000 fine.

If a victim dies, the driver can be charged with a felony in the first degree and receive up to 30 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of 4 years.

For drivers who are under the influence of an intoxicating substance, the mandatory minimum sentence is 2 years in prison. Driver’s licenses may also be revoked in any case where the perpetrator left the scene.

The SAME THING happened to my girlfriend (see about 5 posts up).

It happened to my girlfriend in PA. It's a summary offense (a traffic ticket) of ~$250 and a few points (4 points?) In PA.

It's no wonder everybody runs after striking vehicles with no occupants. There's zero incentive to report it. You report it and you pay a $500-$1,000 deductible. You don't report it and you may not get caught and even if you do, it's a sub-$400 ticket.

The cop who investigated my incident told me he's been a cop since 2015. He told me "pre-covid, hit and runs were RARE (for his department in an affluent town) and he maybe investigated one each week or two. Since Covid, I get at least 5-10 hit and run Reports every single week. I rarely catch them unless somebody had a ring camera or a witness reported it. And even when I do, it's a ~$250 ticket with some points. No arrest. No jail time. It's like a speeding ticket".

Welcome to the jungle.

Hoss, get a good dashcam.

AZDOME M550 3 Channel 4K Dash Cam, 4K+1080P Dual, 1440P+1080P+1080P Front Inside Rear Triple Car Camera, Free 64GB Card, Built-in Wi-Fi GPS, IR Night Vision, 3.19" IPS, Parking Mode, Support 256GB Max https://a.co/d/6TbxB8O

I have one of these in each car. The parking mode would capture the incident.

Not to be argumentative, but I see several other spaces available, there were probably more open spaces even farther away. You had a good faith premonition based on your observation of the other vehicle, tempted fate, and lost.

This is why I always park in the South 40, and try to park nowhere near any loose carts. Having said that, one time, I was walking out to my car on an extremely windy day, and there's a wayward cart barreling towards my front quarter panel. I just barely managed to use my cart to block the other cart.....a heavy hit. Just as in the Final Destination movie franchise, if fate wants to get you, you're gonna get got, despite your best efforts.
