I am a laymen when it comes to law & even I can summarize that the penalty for hit & run (which is a malicious act)
should be a $1000. fine & loss of license until the victim has been made whole .

It sounds simple right ? Why are these law makers so inept ?

This is why I always park in the South 40, and try to park nowhere near any loose carts. As for the asshat who banged into it, I’m not looking for a public flogging but enough of aggravation that they won’t forget in a hurry.

People that drive those little Toyota SUVs are some of the worst drivers. Hit and run? She will just claim that she didn't notice.

If I saw her parked like that next to me, I would have moved my car before she returned.

Parking a car to reduce the potential for damage from your part time anonymous neighbors requires great skill. Even more so in the northeast, where disrespect prevails.

Park far away from the store. Covet the end space, and get close to that side curb. Don't park behind a "pull through", because they will use your hood as a staging area to load their car from the rear. Don't park next to a pull through, because they will run their shopping buggy along your side to access the rear of their vehicle. Don't park downhill, because the driver next to you will let gravity slam his door onto your side.

Penalties for hit-and-run accidents

If a hit-and-run driver is eventually tracked down, they can be criminally charged with the following:

For damage to personal property only, the offending driver can be charged with a misdemeanor in the second degree, which carries penalties of up to 60 days of jail time and a maximum $500 fine.

If the victim suffers personal injury, the offending driver can be charged with a second- or third-degree felony, which carries up to 5 years in prison and a maximum $5,000 fine.

If a victim dies, the driver can be charged with a felony in the first degree and receive up to 30 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of 4 years.

For drivers who are under the influence of an intoxicating substance, the mandatory minimum sentence is 2 years in prison. Driver’s licenses may also be revoked in any case where the perpetrator left the scene.

The only problems with "up to" penalties is that no one has been charged the max fine/jailtime in the last 50 years. Everything is reduced to almost no penalty and everyone but the victim is happy. Prosecuter doesn't have to prosecute, perp. happy to get much lighter sentence. Also, sentences now not being pursued for many, what used to be, crimes. The only ones punished are you and me.

What I always find amusing is backing into a parking space causes more damage than those parking in the space "the right way," then backing out normally.

Then those who back into an angled spaced and sit there and fiddle faddle fkn around for a half hour doing pull & backups to swing around, then leave going the wrong way.

If I had parked next to that car, saw it, my wife would have told me, "so you parked there to prove a point and now the car is scratched and dented?"
