heat treating-- oil quenching fire at work
Today's excitement was provided by Jim. Had a number of parts made out of O-1 tool steel that needed to be heat treated. The "O-1" signifies that it must be quenched in oil.
Jim designed a wire basket to fit in the pail of oil. So Jim heats up the parts for the required amount of time at 1600*F in the furnace. Using his high temp gloves, he takes the wire basket out of the furnace and goes to submerse them in oil. But there is a "slight" problem with Jim's basket design. The heat made the top of the basket wider so the red hot parts are only touching the surface of the oil. Instant flame about 6' high and excessive amounts of smoke The one sheetmetal guy saw what was going on and used the fire extinguisher on the parts and flaming oil. Jim filled most of the shop with heavy smoke. Lots of fans going and doors open Everything is fine and nobody got hurt Here's one song that fits |

BIG ooops
Normally when quenching, you get a second or two of flame as the parts are submersed. As Jim discovered today, red hot parts ignite oil in a flash of the eye. So the wire basket is caught and Jim is trying to hammer down the one corner to get it to drop in without spilling the oil. It didn't work as planned |

We had a guy badly bend the tow bar on a jet engine transport trailer. He took it upon himself to fix it. Got a torch and heated it red hot and bent it back straight, then poured oil on it to quench it. Wooooff instant flames and smoke threatening to catch the jet engine on fire too.
Luckily others were smart enough to grab fire extinguishers and put it out. |

Well you guys did not run into a major problem.
Some idiot tried playing forged in fire in Cohoes NY a couple years ago and ended up causing one hell of a fire. Took out close to 3 blocks. |
