If you needed to restore an F-105 to mission-ready status, you need one.

All depends on parts you can reuse. New parts are very expensive, and may not be readily available on the open market. Man hours working on this is completely up in the air.

If we could gather a large number of parts from different sources, and take it as a given we would have all the parts we needed, how much time?

One mechanic? Skilled, unskilled or no help? Full time or hobby? Could take years...

That depends on a lot of variables. New blades? Balancing the old blades? Welding required? Balancing the assembly? Using the existing fuel system?

For simplicity, one expert who has years of experience maintaining them in the field. All parts at hand. An engine in good shape, but needing a going over to bring it to mission ready status. Not a piece of junk, just a good, complete engine that has been sitting around for a long time ( say in a museum). Picture a VERY motivated veteran working full time on a museum acquisition.

25 years in the military gas turbine engine business. 17 years on the J79-7A. It all depends on the existing condition of the engine you've got. I'd guess... you've got a TX surplus USAF J 75. In that case, it won't be hard to ascertain the engine condition, the records will tell the story. I suspect, for running, little needs to be done... airworthiness is another matter however. Please PM me if can be of further assistance! Spares can be had easily, I believe. |

How many mechanics? And as mentioned, is this engine to be airworthy, or for something else? There are just too many variables to give you a good time estimate. If it was the only project a mechanic had, and all the spares were in place, it could be done in a few weeks. That said, you could get in the motor, and all kinds of shit could be wrong (or right) just depending. If it is to be airworthy, the turbine blades need to be NDI'd (non destructive inspection) ie: eddy current, mag particle, xray, etc. If the motor is for just firing off and making noise on a test stand, the whole thing may not need to be torn down, and a good boroscoping would find damaged blades that would require you to tear it all the way down or not. You definitely don't want a HPT blade exiting the case when you are running it full tilt boogie. That would be bad, Mmmmkay!!

Thanks, Wendy.
I just really needed a ballpark estimate for a reasonable timeline, that would be semi-plausible. |
