Default Making Progress

Got 3 checks/wire transfers done today to Dad and Mom's heirs (us kids).

so a nice chunk of change.

maybe get a new iMac and a larger lathe in the coming months.

Dad passed away on 5/28/21, and i'm basically done with his estate today, 8/13/21, about 11 weeks total.

still have to file his final taxes next year, so held some money back to cover that later.

pro tip: have parents that plan ahead. have heirs that get along with each other. that makes things go very smoothly. selling the house in a hot market helps too.

How many copies of the death certificate did you need? When my Dad passed, they ended up needing about 25.

Back in 1999, they were $5 each here in PA. When Mary's Dad passed about 2010, they were $20 each.( also PA)

Yep, my sister and I went to the lawyer with my mother a few years ago to figure out her will.

It’s just me and my sister because my brother passed away.
My mom wanted to still spilt up everything 3 ways with a third going to my brothers kids.

My sister had a fit insisting her kids should get more even though it’s just me and her as the surviving kids.

The violence of the Italian mafia is kids play compared to a sibling after a family death.

ordered 20, more than i needed, probably used 7 or so (i didn't track it yet). most places are good making their own copy off the original you offer them, but some places need an original, like places you mail forms to (life insurance, investment places). i don't know what they charged for the 20 i requested.

Everybody wanted a notarized "original" instead of a good copy that you could easily see was notarized.

Glad it went well, as you and your sister get along.

I already see issues with SIL and her leaches of kids... FIL will not make shit easy on anyone either unfortunately. His family will make it a mosy unpleasant time.

I’d agree based on what I saw when my grandparents passed, and I predict the same when my MIL passes, but I’m optimistic of my own siblings being reasonable when our parents pass, hopefully it goes as smoothly as DABs has

I got a few $s when my mother died. My sister and brother handled it. Since it was them that also handled my father's will, I was very concerned. When my father died he willed the little he had to his care-taker in the nursing home and wrote us out of the will. Sister and brother got a lawyer.

The judge ruled that everything was handled properly - that the caretaker was father's daughter. I guess that means that La-a (Ladasha - the dash don't be silent) is now my sister - the only black in a completely white family. I guess they handled it ok then. Their lawyer selection was arguably awful.

It sounds like your Mother wants to follow the "per stirpes" rules, which is very common. Basically, since there were 3 children, if they are all still alive at the time of your Mother's death, each will get a third of the estate. If one of the children has passed with provable children, then the grandchildren split that third of the estate equally among however many there are. If one of the children dies without having any children of their own, the remaining two heirs split the estate in half.

Lots of people don't like this, especially when they feel it adversely affects them or their children, but it is the fairest way IMO to split an estate between children and grandchildren.

But, I've been on the other side too. My Mom pre-deceased her Dad, so me and my two siblings were supposed to each get a third of my Mom's quarter of my Grandfather's estate, which was originally written as "per stirpes". Of course, two of my Uncle's threw a decades-long hissy fit about this, and my Grandfather eventually re-wrote the will, writing my Mother out of it. What a couple of greedy assholes.

all bills that are valid are being paid, and also all refunds due are being chased and collected.

on yesterday's disbursement, the math didn't work out perfectly, so one sister got one penny less. sorry sis. she's ok with that though, we talked. she had some other benefits worth more than the missing penny. math was correct to the one millionth of a percent. close enough!

i've held back a few bucks to pay bills and last taxes next year, then whatever is left, i'll pass out then.

just checking my numbers, after 11 weeks, i've passed out 97.4% of the assets to the heirs.

thanks to Dad and Mom for planning ahead and making this easy on me.

Sorry to hear about the deceased. Estates bring out the true character of people. Luckily my wife and I established a plan in our mid 30’s that is logical and easy to understand.

This.

When my sister passed her estate wound up with negative value and it still took July->Nov to resolve with her lack of preplanning.
