Default ******IF you want 1 license plate in VA, step on in******

Ok Folks,
Senator Locke was kind enough to introduce this bill on my behalf, so if you want to help get this bill passed YOU NEED TO GET INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!
I hope to get a House Bill introduced as well and will post an update if it happens.
Below is a link to the Senators to contact that will discuss this bill first:

LIS > Bill Tracking > Committees > 2012 session

Just click on their names and you can see their e-mail and phone number

Here is a link that shows all the Senators and their contact info:

Welcome to the Senate of Virginia

By all means contact your Senator and feel free to use any and all of the below statement to e-mail them as well

I found this on-line and tweaked it some:

Dear Honorable Virginia Legislators
I request you vote to revoke the current law requiring the display of a front license plate on passenger vehicles by approving Senate Bill 27 (Bill Tracking - 2012 session > Legislation) when it comes before you.
I support keeping the current licensing fee structure and would like to discuss the significant benefits to not requiring front license plates. The reasons are briefly summarized in the paragraphs below:

First, eliminating the need for a front license plate will significantly reduce the state costs associated with production, storage, and shipping. The $1,000,000+ saved can be used to help balance the State budget or earmark it for road maintenance.

Second; a front license plate restricts the performance of some passenger vehicles. Modern cars are no longer being designed with front plates in mind. Installing the mounting brackets that are necessary to hold the plates interfere with the cars' aerodynamics, engine cooling efficiency, often get damaged during the car-washing process and also cause a devaluation of Collector’s Edition or other such Limited Edition vehicles when required to drill or otherwise modify the front bumper.

Third, unnecessary damage is sustained from minor bumper-to-bumper collisions, because the front mounting brackets on passenger cars can cause cracks and abrasions to the rear bumpers of the cars that they hit as well as rendering the license plate unreadable.

Finally, police officers will be more productive in stopping dangerous motor vehicle violations such as drunk driving, reckless driving, speeding, racing, etc., since their time will not be compromised by a Virginia motorist who simply did not have a front license plate on display.

Some Law enforcement officials are opposed to a measure abolishing the front license plate requirement, as they believe that losing the extra plate will make it more difficult for them to do their jobs in the best possible manner. However, in the 19 or more states that have abolished the front license plate requirement, there is no evidence of a decline in public safety as a result of the plate removal.

I urge you, the law making officials, to remove the two plate requirement. If after say 5 years, statistics show the front plate removal significantly hinders Law enforcement, the law can be changed back to require a front plate.

Lastly, We the Voters and General Public of Virginia are appreciative of the Law Enforcement Officers and Law Making Officials of this great state and will continue to support them in their endeavor to make this state a safe place to live. We hope you will vote to give 1 plate a try in these tough economic times.

Sincerely,

There must be a few folks that want this, two other bills (SB304 & SB 423) are asking for one plate as well.
Maybe this will make it out of Committee this year!

It is sitting in committee until 2013, why? Who the F knows.

Reply I received from Norment:

Thank you for your recent email expressing support for Senate Bill 27. I appreciate you contacting me about this important issue.

Senator Maime Locke introduced Senate Bill 27, legislation which would allow Virginians to display only one license plate on registered motor vehicle. This bill has been referred to the Senate Transportation Committee.

I agree that the Commonwealth could gain significant funds by requiring cars to only use one license plate instead of two license plates. In 2010 I introduced Senate Bill 519, legislation which would permit Virginia to only issue one license plate per vehicle. Unfortunately, this bill was passed by indefinitely in the Senate Committee on Transportation, thereby preventing further legislative action. If Senate Bill 27 comes before me on the Senate floor, I will be certain to remember your thoughts. If I am given the opportunity, I will gladly share them with my colleagues in the General Assembly.

As your representative I realize the importance of your input. Thank you again for contacting me about this issue. Please continue to keep me aware of issues that are of significance you. You may continue tracking this bill, or any other piece of legislation at Legislative Information System > 2012 Session. Please contact my office if there is anything with which I may assist you.

Sincerely,

Senator Tommy Norment

Nice reply

Thanks for sharing Jim, its good to know who & what is said to constituents

Tommy did put that in for me a few times before.................some of our elected officials think that if they do nothing with the bill and it dies in committee they did nothing wrong!!!!!

They need to grow a pair and deal with issues in a direct timely fashion.

Too bad it's dead once again for 2012 unless it gets added to another bill that gets out of committee........hum it's happened before
I will get an answer why they think continuing it to 2013 is the right way to go.......other than they consider it a softer way to kill it

My reply to Norment...:

Sirs,

As you noted, this bill was sent to committee once again where it, again, languishes along with all the other bills that have ever addressed this issue. So yet another year passes where this same issue is sent to either the Transportation or Law Enforcement committees, where it dies and yet no explanation is given to the constituency. This is the fifth year where a bill of this type has been passed-by either in the house or the senate. It's a crying shame that a way to save the Commonwealth some money is passed over year after year and yet taxes continue to rise.

Thank You!

I will be sending each person on those committees this very type question as well and call the SP POC to discuss their issues.
Wish I had the time to go visit them in Richmond as in the past.....

Feel free to also ask the State Police why they strongly recommend NO to our legislators on this issue every year:

Don't get me going on these jackbooted azzhat revenue collectors. There is no empirical evidence that supports their position on this issue. NONE. It's purely opinion. The evidence from the other one plate states is documented.

BTW, I don't bash cops. As some of you know one of my closest friends is a county cop. I just haven't liked the VSP since my childhood days and some of the things they still do really bother me.

While we're at it, why does the Commonwealth still ban Radar Detectors? Forty Nine other states don't have it....

I need to run for office someday....

My e-mail to Mr Cox.

Quote:
Sir,

Your name was passed to me as the spokesperson for the Virginia State Police. Your organization has taken the stance that the Commonwealth requiring a single license plate is dangerous and detrimental to law enforcement. I would like to request the empirical evidence that is being used to support this position.

Requiring a single plate on vehicles in the Commonwealth would save over 1 million dollars per year in production costs. That is a fact not speculation. These are savings that could be used for equipment or training that your department needs to improve conditions or to protect the troopers.

My parents wanted me to move back to VA and get a job with an up and coming Aviation company.

Due to all the Taxes and other laws like the ban on radar detectors, I will not go back!

Love to see them changes these laws, but they are too money hungry!

Nuts!

Good Luck in getting it Changed!

I received the following answer:

Lieutenant Colonel E.A. Stockton, Director of the Bureau of Field Operations for the Virginia State Police asked that I thank you for and respond to your e-mail of January 28, 2012, concerning single license plates.

In regards to your e-mail no public record responsive to your request exists. Additionally, any documentation supporting a particular regulative position(LAS Forms) would be contained in Governor’s working papers which are exempt pursuant to 2.2-3705.7.

I regret that I am not able to assist you in this matter.

I don't understand how the statute he is quoting applies. Statute Sounds to me as if it is only an opinion based in nothing.
