Looks like good driveway material. But I would never want to build on the side of a mountain. What a PITA

The contractor removed 4' of overburden and used that to form a shelf and grade the driveway. Then he had a blast crew drill 15' into the bedrock on the back edge, along with a series of lower holes. So that's how we ended up with a 19' tall cut.

After discussing the options, we decided to put the back of the house about 12' away from the cut. It will be a tall basement, masonry walls on three sides, transitioning to wood in the front. We'll add in a few feet of soil behind for drainage, and leave the rock exposed. The owner can light up the rock at night.

We'll also have to divert drainage above the cut, and maybe add a fence.

That's what the high cotton folk do here.

For me, the road to get to the road to get to his 15% driveway sucks. Narrow pavement, random radius curves, switchbacks. Just nasty.

What, exactly, is "weird" about it?

People in states with real mountains, where they also build houses on them, are laughing at you.

I’m not crazy about the slope on my homesite but it’s a little bit hilly up in these parts of the state.

I'm not an engineer but I sure would allow some distance to the house for the designer rock slide. That's the first place kids will go to play.

That first pic on the left side where the dirt seems to be graded back about 25-30 degrees? Cut the rest of it to match.

What's the slope on your site, 0.5%?
