Know yur limitations final chapter.
Update on my neighbor building his own seawall. He got the backhoe tractor stuck again... but....this time only the shovel end. He was able to hook a large tow strap to his pickup and managed to pull it free before it sunk this time...
He is almost finished, and I must say, he ended up doing a pretty good job of it so far. I still think he would have been better off hiring a company to deal with it, but now he has the satisfaction of being able to say he did it himself. I took these last two pics at high tide. Looks to me he should have gone a little higher with the wall. I think if we have any kind of storm surge it's going to go over it and cause a wash out. We'll see.... |

Surely appears it should have been higher. And it also does not look level.
Rookie work. (yes I'm qualified to call out a rookie, I've built seawalls in both wood and sheet pile. I've also built many docks and even a few small bridges ) |

I don't comment on them much, but I like Zeeks pix.
They tell a story. Be it right or wrong, they're entertaining. The banter, no so much. I'll go back to yelling at clouds now... |

Not very nice - but I agree with the braggadocio - gets old.
I live on a 7 mile long 2400 acre lake and two days ago we had sustained winds of 27 mph with 33 mph gusts coming from dead South (the longest "fetch" possible on this lake) and we had 2-1/2 to 3 foot "rollers" for hours....that seawall is too low....and those are hardly the worst winds we've had across that expanse.. Think hurricane - here is a fairly mild storm from around Thanksgiving last year: |

I believe more should share their experiences and accomplishments with the group, the best ones have pictures. I look forward to Zeeks posts...and Data, and Giraffe, and DAB, and Rickles, and Lokata, and Yadkin, and Norm, and Mike Mercury...and even UD. Some of it is informative. Some of it is entertaining. All of it is why I log in. (disclaimer: not directed at you Mr. Frankie, I like your posts) (disclaimer #2: sad that we need to have disclaimers ) |

At any rate, the pier in the pictures looks like mine before the stain treatment; is it me or is the quality of pressure treated lumber anymore just total crap ?
I put up a 100' privacy fence at my old home in Virginia in 1987 and its still there and arrow straight using "salt-treated" lumber; the decking on my 17 year old pier in Florida needs 5-10 boards replaced every summer over the last 5 or 6 years, not holding up well whatsoever. And last year I had to "scab" several joists. Ugh. Heavy stain helps some but the dang thing has been a constant source of maintenance: |

Had a load delivered by Lowe’s last summer. Next day had to take back a bunch due to a lot of boards and even 4x4’s warped overnight. Even 2x2”s which were $2.62. For $.69 I’d throw away, not at over $2.50 |

They have changed chemicals in pressure treated wood a couple of times, the new stuff doesn't last at all. I have some 25 plus year old refuses to rot.
