Truck Engine Thread: Cylinder Deactivation, Start/Stop, Direct Injection
I get the quest for better mileage, valid goal, but things seem to have really gone off the rails. Take GM's 2.7l 4 cylinder turbo....in full size trucks. This engine has cylinder deactivation, meaning you're running your full size truck on the highway.....on TWO cylinders. Really? Can I predict massive failure in GM's future? Both GM and Dodge have failed with this technology in their V8 offerings.

Super Duty Diesel.
No cylinder deactivation or stop & start bullchit. Also, the transmission shifter is on the column where it belongs in a pickup truck. |

Wait until they go 100% electric. In like 5 to 10 years. Ford. Gm. All of the automakers marching to the woke agenda will go bust and people like myself will continue to operate and maintain fully functional decades-old vehicles. I can say for a fact that the start/stop/cylinder-drop mechanicals and electricals are to appease the government and really are of no real world benefit. On the contrary, starters ($$$$) fail at a much, much higher rate as do the whistles and bells needed to manage the system. All this foisted on the public. My newest Truck is an '05 and my newest car is a '67----for a reason. I like to not spend $$$$ on parts and I like reliability.

Heard a guy on the radio the other day complaining about the starter failing on his new 'start/stop' car and how it was $$$ to have replaced. Said he is in a stop and go commute and his starter has to start the car over a hundred times each way to work. Can you imagine? His starter gets more wear and tear in a single day than mine does in 2 years of driving. Like ethanol fuel and wind power, and EV's, it's a big lie that can't be supported by facts and physics. |

Got this gizmo to keep my GMC truck in full V-8 mode.
https://www.rangetechnology.com/prod...-dfm_disabler/ Wife's BMW has a real rocker switch to keep the start/stop bs off. Been that way since day 1 of buying it.I just replaced and programmed the battery after 8 years of service. |

4-6-8 were a pig even on all 8. They way gm killed the cylinders was horrible and engine would feel like it's coming apart to me.
I wouldn't buy gm products with their lifter issues. Those were a failure waiting to happen. That start/stop is bad enough with the stress it puts on starters and batteries. All this shit in the name of fuel economy. "it'll save the consumers money" bullshit. Doesn't save a dime and costs too much up front. |

My dad worked at a GM plant and we'd get test mules once a year or so to drive for 2 or 3 weeks. Kept a log of mileage and issues. One Buick took a shit after 2 or 3 days.
We had the 4-6-8 Caddy... Both test mule and used one, both were dogs and plagued with issues those years. |

I assume that plugs into the OBDII port like a tuner? Does it stay in place, or do you plug it in, it does it's work, then you remove it? |

Threw codes constantly. When I bought my truck, I bought one without AFM/DFM and start- stop. Even without that feature, range device, or pulsar, you can still have lifters fail. |

Usually within a few months of its inception on a new model Auto Start/Stop and VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) generally have aftermarket devices to disable them, already the case with major marquees' products.

I'll also say this, as an ex tech with motorcycle, auto, truck, etc. experience: the smaller but more high performance engines, such as motorcycle or turbo 4 cylinder 4 valve per cylinder jobs, are always operating at or close to their stress limit. They are high-strung and have to be to make the power they do from such a small size. The benefit is light weight and economy. The penalty is shorter service life and expensive repairs. In my world, I am better off with a pickup truck with a V8 engine that doesn't have to work to death to make adequate power to tow with or haul loads. A manual trans or simple 4 or 5 speed auto with overdrive and a mechanical limited slip rear end. Nothing else needed or wanted. All of the intrusive and active engine, transmission, brake, steering, and driver management items are like the spout on the latest 2 gallon gas cans---government mandated crap that makes the end-product all but un-usable.

direct injection has changed things; low rpm torque can now be achieved without needing 6, 8, cylinders. Now... talking daily drivers here and not racing.
Here is the engineer covering this 2.7: skip to 8:15 for internal details. I plan on ordering a 2024 Canyon Denali (which will have this engine at the 310hp 430lb/ft level) and I have no fears. |
