Wait. Where are all the electronic sensors? How can an engine run without a crapload of sensors, active fuel management, mass air flow monitoring, pollution control equipment, direct injection or fuel injection, etc.? Where's the cylinder deactivation?

Oh yeah, I know that beast. Back in the 90s a friend of mine purchaced a low mile 71 LT1 Corvette coupe. When he opened the hood, that's what was sitting on the engine, air cleaner assy and all. That setup was worth what he paid for the whole car. He later sold the setup, and wound up with the car for free. Knowing him, he probably made above and beyond what the car cost him. He passed 5 years ago. Family still has the car. It's been stored all these years.

Buddy of mine from high school was building one of those but could never find the cross-ram intake.
7000 grand revving small block is the shit. Be ready to adjust those solid lifters a lot. Probably every oil change...... |

In September 1968, fresh out of high school, the '69 model years were just coming out.
I bought a new '68 Camaro six cylinder, stripped except for a radio. The sticker was $2,700, I got it for $2,200 cuz it was a model-year old. The dealer had a brand-new '68 Z, dual quad, black on black, close ratio, 4:10 gears. But the sticker was around $3,600 and I couldn't swing it. So that was that. The following spring I had enough money to buy a '69 327 engine that came out of a wrecked station wagon, only had a few thousand miles on it, and dropped that in. My dad thought I was crazy, lol. |

My 69 Z/28 had the 302 dz motor in it. It was rated from the factory at 290 hp. which was for insurance purpose. Wish I still had it.

One of my cousins bored the 283 in his ‘57, around 1966 or ‘67, making what was called a 301 back then - before Chevy made the 302.
Lotta guys had 301s at the drag strip. The Z’s 302 engine is the same thing - a bored 283. But none of this is news. |

In 1979, I had a friend with a '68 Z-28 with the cross ram, DZ302, M-21 Muncie, and 4.11 posi. I raced him with my tripower GTO from the dig, and I was running a 400 Pontiac, M20 4 speed, and 3.55 gears. He jumped me about half a car out of the hole, and we were neck and neck through second, but I drove around him in third and got him by about a car length. His car was MUCH quicker than the SS396 and SS454 Chevelles I used to toy with. The early Z-28's were a very nice, well-balanced package. |

I’ll do a little bragging. Had a ‘70 Challenger 440 Magnum and ‘65 Mustang with built 289 after getting out of the service. Had good times with my dad resorting the cars, new wiring on the Challenger and new motor on the Mustang. Got both cars dirt cheap.
But, the most fun car when I was young was a ‘64 or ‘65 273 Dodge Dart my dad got from a friend of my moms. Maybe it was just because I was a teenager, but damn, that thing moved! |

Put nostalgia on the shelf where it belongs. Today's engines are more powerful, idle better, run cooler, and far less polluting.
