...and closes the circuit that powers the starter. Even though I was absolutely sure...I looked it up just a minute ago. A starter solenoid is an electromagnet which is actuated to engage the starter motor of an internal combustion engine. It is normally attached directly to the starter motor which it controls. Its primary function is as the actuating coil of a contactor which connects the battery to the starter motor proper. Wikipedia |

Not sure which pics these are. It's my first time as an attachment, since P/B started charging for their site.
You can see the 2 accessible bolt the 3rd ir on the top against the block |

I see you have not cleaned your contacts yet. I would clean both positive and negative both ends and at the solinoid inspect cables and test for a full charge battery. Before I pulled the starter.
Have you tried jumping the solinoid yet? |

The switch in that circuit is the ignition switch. When I activate the ignition switch, voltage is delivered to the solenoid that is connected to the starter motor, which causes it to start turning. The solenoid is a "have power, deliver power" to the starter motor, and there is no "switching" that happens at the solenoid. All of the "on/off" switching happens at the ignition switch in my hand. But your attempt at not admitting you were wrong by calling me "UD" is amusing. |

BTW: the "definition" of "switch" in your post exactly describes the ignition switch in my Corvette. |

Do you think that the ignition switch "in your hand" carries all of the current required by the starter motor? It doesn't. That current is "switched" by larger contacts that are engaged by the action of the solenoid. |

Yes, I know what a "relay" is and does, and it is not technically a "switch". |

To jump the solinoid turn the key on then connect the big nuts on either side. Use something heavy duty, pliers handles work well. It will burn them a bit if not your battery is to low, Edit make damn sure it is in neutral. |

With the the video aero posted and this one, the limited time we have up there (long weekends) I'll just replace both parts. This vid shows (more in line/symtoms with our problem) how to get to that 3rd bolt around the bucket arm.
Thanks for the the help folks! |

You said this all happend after jumping it. This sounds like it could be low voltage to the starter.
Edit just watched the video. Looks like a easy fix either way. |

The part replaced in post #38 is called a Bendix drive.
A Bendix drive is a type of engagement mechanism used in starter motors of internal combustion engines. The device allows the pinion gear of the starter motor to engage or disengage the flywheel of the engine automatically when the starter is powered or when the engine fires, respectively. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bendix_drive |
