There is no winning and there is no hyperbole. If you are NOT thinking of all of those factors listed , you're just itching to be an accident. Like a fkn blue haired grandma with hands at 2 and 10 and eyes glued to the tail lights in front of her.

From the time I was 15 and took driver's ed, it was drilled that you drive defensively, that brakes are not the default solution, that you should be aware of your surroundings, that you should drive with a constant update of your exit plan if shit goes south.

All these multiple criteria being considered, with a car jammed up my ass, leads me to INCREASE my distance from them. Accelerate AWAY from the potential accident, not become a component of it. Honestly, I am guilty of tailgating sometimes, but it is because I am not driving based on the car IMMEDIATELY in front of me, I am watching many cars in front of THEM. I look at how much space I have ahead of me. That is where my reaction time comes from. The guy in front of the guy in front of me. When I see THOSE brakes, I respond because the guy in front of me, might not. I'm not letting the car in front of me, draw me right in to his accident.

Slowing down when you have a tailgater is either a dick move or a dangerous one.

I'll let you choose.

WGAFF about DOT/NTSB definitions? Nobody drives according to that bullshit.

I love it, you almost have an altruistic position in your argument, instructions on how I’m to react because you (or anybody) flew up on my ****ing ass and created a dangerous situation by robbing yourself of precious reaction time. Have you even seen the stats?

And it took you a while, but I was waiting for you to use the rationale, that you are driving safely tailgating me because you are driving through me and looking for what cars in front of me are doing.

Hey guess what, you don’t have to drive through me to make safe choices if you’re not tailgating

Lol

I don’t disagree you are guilty of tailgating only “sometimes” as you say, but that’s by your old definition, where you thought 18 feet at 60 was not tailgating, want me to go quote it? Lol

How, exactly, does a driver “give” reaction time to someone behind them?

Browns Ridge Road has driveways like every 20 feet - just signal and pull over into one of them for 5 seconds to let the tailgater go past, and then be on your way. What's so hard about that?

Well Steve, if you were 18 feet behind me traveling at 60 mph, which of these two scenarios would help you the most with the reaction time you robbed yourself of by tailgating me?

I slow down from 60 to 45 mph in two seconds

OR

I slow down from 60 to 45 mph in four seconds?

Correct, lots of places to pull over if I have somebody 10 feet off my ass like aero is. But as you see he has acknowledged that no matter how slowly I decelerate to “pull over” as you suggest, he is going to hit me.

Once again, I cannot slow down or he has acknowledged he will hit me because he is too close

Now you see the conundrum that led us to this thread

Both are dick moves, and only affect reaction time for a few seconds. Then what?

Relevant data

Distance travelled in 2 seconds (typical reaction time) at 60 mph: 176 feet
Irrelevant if you're still rolling also. By the time you get to the lower speed you've nearly doubled the distance you're quoting. So you're looking at something closer to 100 yards.

What I see more often than not is people who become so worried about other drivers that they don't focus on their own driving and they become worse hazards than the people they're fearful of. Begs the question do they lack driving skills or just confidence in their own abilities?

When I follow closely I see upcoming situations before the moron I am following and let off the throttle before they've even lit the brakes. That's because I look ahead more than behind me unlike them. I don't replace brakes because I hardly ever need them. Obviously if the idiot I am following totals their car rear ending the person in front of them because they were paying more attention to me in their mirror instead of what's in front of them (it happens LOL) I can not stop in time because I was simply coasting down to a lower speed but going around them has not been a problem.

The deceleration was from traffic ahead

Now before follow up questions, let’s establish what I just proved (or didn’t)

Based on the data I have posted, average reaction time is 2.3 seconds, we’re going to round it down to two seconds. So for you to see what’s happening in front of you take your foot off the gas and apply the brake… two seconds

Post one speed is 60 so you will have traveled 176 feet before you even start to slow

Under first scenario you are going to hit me, well duh as they say you are only 18 feet off my bumper lol

if I put myself in a position to decelerate two seconds slower, which is easy I just leave more space in front of me, I can give you those two seconds so you don’t hit me. YW
