1978 Pace Car

Coming up for sale at an estate auction near me tomorrow. 5000 miles, 2-owners, L-82. It's sold with a BOS only...which isn't bad here in GA. but, I know causes problems in other states. Their photos of it sucks. They don't even mention the low miles or Pace Car status. It's missing the decals which I understood came in a box and were applied by the dealer. Some did..some didn't apply them. It would really shine up nicely with some effort. It has always been stored inside. I knew the original owner. He made a fortune in the carpet biz. and when he died he had a collection of 600 cars. EVERY year Corvette ever made, Duesenbergs, etc...sometimes his name is mentioned if a car comes up for sale as formerly being in his collection.

What do you think is a fair price for the '78? 13 percent buyers premium. No title hurts trying to flip it for profit.

That '78 looks like its in very good condition. With such low miles, it could fetch some big bucks. I'd bid up to $20k, if I was in the market. And if I had $20k to spend.

GA. won't issue titles on old cars without the original. There is some kind of bonded title I've heard about...but, unsure of the paperwork and process. I heard one of the auction people comment the car wasn't that valuable like the '60s Corvettes...they really don't understand what it is.

Somebody will probably pay obscene money for it, but I wouldn't give more than maybe 10k or 12k. For a '78? I don't care if it's a collectors model, it's not that valuable in my eyes.

Good question. I've always just passed when "no title" comes up. I want to buy a car, not a story. Having said that, there must be a way to get a title from a bill of sale, especially in a case like this where the original owner is actually known, and it wasn't a dozen owner chain of custody issue.

I remember a story of Corvette Mike a Corvette dealer in Michigan found a authentic 78 Corvette pace car with 15 miles on it. He said they put a battery in it and air in the tires and the car started. When he sold it the new owner wanted the dust left on it.

I wound up working on my C10 and didn't make it back to the auction. The no title scared me out of buying it. The '78 PC and '72 coupe are my favorite C3 models. It just scares away too many potential buyers for the future. I'll keep my ears open and see if I can find out though. I can honestly say that I've been to quite a few auctions in my life and never ran across any deals at one.

If you live in GA and bought it with a BOS you can register it there. Nor sure about other states but once it is registered and you have a current registration certificate you can take that and a BOS and title/registration in TN.
