I just thought of the best corrupt way to make money. This one is just a general corruption that doesn't involve the po-po. A friend of mine lived past Angeles University. Traffic is often very heavy there. Tuition is soon due for students, an important part to know here. My friend is on his way home once again with heavy traffic near the school and his speed is low. A young lady sees an American driving an American car. She steps out in front of him. He can't stop in time and hits her. It's a minor car vs pedestrian accident. He gives her a few pesos, kind words, and all is ok, right? Wrong. She sues him in local court. What she didn't know is we all had made friends with a local connection. Ben. Ben was actually a decent fella that'd made good through working with the base providing goods and services. My friend contacts Ben. Ben says, "Walang Problema". A few days later the charges disappear, the girl disappears, and "Walang Problema". The girl doesn't bother my friend for money again.

More to the story, sadness involving Ben. Ben went to sleep one night back in '88 and didn't wake up. He must've had a heart attack during his sleep time.

Maybe I should have a few peso's separated for a po-po encounter then.

Most definitely! Always keep a few hundred pesos tucked away somewhere for emergency's. I bought my way out of a few pickles while I was there.

I think that is gone now. That was 2 years ago so I am sure there is a new scam happening now.

I thought stashing some money would be wise for the Philippines based on what I was reading online.

I had to google Bullet Scam and read it has been prohibited by the President, but I would have to be careful regardless.

Being my first time visiting I will have to be careful in the airport, I do not want to be tagged as an easy mark. I have traveled overseas several times, but this would be the first time to the Philippines. I am hoping meeting my escort in the airport will help me.

With your background and the responses you've given, you should be fine. You'll go through customs, get your baggage, and then be able to meet your lady. The greeting area has a distinct separation from all you go through. There's a physical barrier. Then, you're on your on. It's good you'll have someone meet you because the scammers are there and looking for marks.

I am not over concerned, I know the airport is probably the worst area I will see and I am prepared. My escort should be easy to spot, she is short and has long black hair, I am guessing she will not blend in at the airport at all .

I got the order wrong, baggage then customs.

That's good you feel better prepared. Being aware and alert is part of not being a mark.

Two young...hell, not much from me at the time but still, from my squadron went to the Squadron Christmas Party held on the far end of town. Taking Jeepneys or public trans, one had to change Jeepneys at a central point. They get to the party, have a good time, and then make their way back. When they came back it was early am. Early am at the central point is not a good place to be for two young GIs. They hopped on a lonely Jeepney. The Jeepney took off with only the two GIs as passengers. You know what happened next. One GI with an abdominal gun shot wound and the other beat up. The one that was shot was extremely lucky. He also had a bullet wound length ways across his lip. How do I know all this? The gun shot victim worked in my shop.
