USS Enterprise (CVN 65) final homecoming back to NNS
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division celebrated the return of USS Enterprise (CVN 65) today during the ship's final homecoming to the shipyard for her inactivation. Towed from Naval Station Norfolk to the shipyard, Enterprise had more than 100 shipbuilders on board who were involved with the construction and maintenance of this first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
I got a ride to NNS today! Kinda sad day, but a cool one |

She served the Navy and her crews over the decades well.
Will be sad to see her gone. |

They so over designed that ship, t was awesome! It would do in access of 70 knots, it actually had enough power to crush its own hull. I remember one of the instructors in A School who was on it during Vietnam, he said one of their first deployments they got attacked by some gun boats. He said they stood on the fan tail and laughed at them until the bullets started to hit, then they realized they didn't have anything to shoot back with. So they pointed it out to sea at ahead flank, and just outran them. Then they launched a couple of fighters and blew the gunboats out of the water. He said they ended up welding some gun mounts and guns around the deck after that.
I hope they preserve it for a museum, it's got a huge legacy as far as our National defense is concerned. |

She was the latest and greatest when I was in. Watched her come into Alameda when she moved from the East Coast Navy to the West Coast. The news said both bridges were crowded to watch her come in.
And the bunnies from the Playboy club made the day even better. End of the carrier Navy I was in. They are all retired now. Hope they do make one of the '60' boats a museum. I got to do carrier quals on the Yorktown, Hornet, and Midway. Last trip before the Midway went in to be overhauled and expanded from her post WWII size to 4.3 acre flight deck. Good bye pretty lady. You served your country well. |

Yeah, we'll, I'm pretty sure none of those crusty old Navy instructors would ever BS us boots. And clearly I'm remembering the numbers wrong. But I did a little Googling and I found several posts from folks that served on board (or so they say) that said it achieved 40+ knots on sea trials and several times again early in life. The official sights claim it to be the fastest and the quickest from a stop carrier that we've ever built but will only claim 30+ officially.
