A heroic Coast Guard swimmer who saved the life of a disabled woman during Hurricane Ian was publicly thanked by President Joe Biden on Saturday
Despite the gratitude, Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Zach Loesch is due to be discharged within two months over his refusal to be vaccinated
He is one of the 2,632 members of the Coast Guard who have refused vaccination
In total, there are around 15,000 active servicemen and women who are facing discharge over their vaccine stance
Loesch, who has applied for a religious exemption, said that he didn't bring up the vaccine mandate when speaking to Biden
Most servicemembers who refuse the vaccine will be generally discharged meaning they can collect benefits and reenlist if they get the vaccine

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was publicly thanked by President Joe Biden for his Hurricane Ian heroics, days before he is due to be fired over the military's Covid-19 vaccine policy.

In a press release, Biden expressed his gratitude to Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Zach Loesch: 'I told him how proud of him I was and thanked him for all the work he and his Coasties are doing to save lives,' the statement read.

As of September 2022, there are 2,632 unvaccinated members of the US Coast Guard.



The military branch with the most unvaccinated members if the US Marine Corps with 8,913, followed by the Air Force with 3,955, then the Navy, 2,623, the branch with the fewest unvaccinated members if the US Army with 1,337.

Loesch was working alongside Lieutenant Commander Christopher Hooper in his rescue.

The statement thanked the pair 'for the heroic work that they and their Coast Guard colleagues have performed during search and rescue operations in response to Hurricane Ian.'

The release continued: 'The President thanked them for saving lives and asked for a report on the work that continues to rescue Floridians.'

'He also asked if they needed any additional support that he can provide to accelerate successful rescues; they indicated they have gotten what they need to execute their vital mission,' the statement concluded.

Here's what I don't get. Brandon has advisors, every POTUS does. They can't all be brain dead. Don't any of them ever tell him "Look. With all due respect, this is a bad political decision you're making here. Please reconsider."

Sure, ultimately it's his call but it looks like he completely ignores any and all advice he may be getting and I can't believe all his advisors are brain dead.

Take his recent gaff regarding the dead congresswoman. I can't quite wrap my head around how that even happens. Presidential speeches aren't freewheeling affairs. They're well scripted and I have to believe reviewed by *someone* before he steps up to the plate.

One BIG thing wrong with the writing of this article. They make it sound as though a General Discharge is ok, due to not losing benefits.

Any time a person in this category fills out paperwork in the future, they will need to check the "Less than Honorable" box. At a minimum, they will need to explain, and the employer/loan provider/CCW authority/etc. will be able to discriminate based upon their own personal views. Bullshit.

Its the kiss of death for many jobs, I wouldn't hire someone with that discharge - many "dishonorable" discharges have been upgraded to "general" with slick representation.

Biden should stick to calling on dead people.

For all anyone knows the guy could voted for Brandon but even if he didn't the fact that someone was thanking him for saving a life would have knocked him pretty far off kilter. Like you said, he was just doing his job, it isn't something he's used to.

I counted the number of Search and Rescue missions we ran out of Oregon Inlet, NC for an entire year once. That number was 947. Wasn't thanked for saving anyone in the 4 years I served. Our crew got a free "all you can eat" king crab leg meal once though and that was nice. Also got a free beer once time by walking into a bar wearing the uniform, didn't turn it down
